For the Oklahoma State Cowboys, this season started with dreams of Big XII and National Championships. Now they’re simply doing anything they can to salvage a season that’s spiraling dangerously out of control.

The 2009 season started for the Cowboys just the way they had hoped, with a very impressive 24-10 victory against Georgia. For the first time in decades, there was football fever in Stillwater. But all that excitement ended just a week later when Case Keenum and the Houston Cougars went into Boone Pickens Stadium and upset Oklahoma State just a week later.

Now the Cowboys have to deal with their worst nightmare: The suspension of All Big-XII wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant who was not only Oklahoma State’s leading receiver but also punt returner, was thrown off the team on Wednesday, after he admitted to lying to the NCAA about offseason workouts that apparently included former NFL star Deion Sanders. This blow is a significant one to the Cowboys, who were already playing without superstar tailback Kendall Hunter.

As for Texas A&M, they too opened their season with promise, starting 3-0 against what most would agree was less than stellar competition. However, just like Oklahoma State they suffered an embarrassing setback last weekend when they went to Dallas and took on SEC bottom feeder Arkansas, and got embarrassed 47-19. The Aggies actually mustered more total yardage than their opponents, but were unable to keep up on the scoreboard.

Despite their setback Saturday, Texas A&M still features one of the premier offenses in the country, currently ranked second behind only Houston. They are also fifth in passing yards at 334 per game.

Expect Oklahoma State to counter with a much more balanced attack, as they rank 10 th in scoring offense, and 25 th in rushing yardage. There should be an even heavier emphasis placed on the running game, now that Bryant’s season is effectively done for the Cowboys.

While Oklahoma State has more talent, the real question plaguing them is how motivated they’ll be to play. They’re going on the road, to play a team that they’ve lost to in four of the last five years, and they’re doing so without their best wide receiver, and best overall playmaker.

Texas A&M still isn’t quite as talented across the board as Oklahoma State, but at least for one week, they’ll be the better team.

Our Pick: Texas A&M +5 ½
