Oregon fell on its face in the opening game not even coming close to the NCAA football line. They gained just 152 yards against Boise State, and then suffered the shame of LaGarrette Blount’s unspeakable straight right hand to the face of a Bronco player. But they’ve managed to turn things around in a big way. They prevailed in a shootout against Purdue, then ended Utah’s unbeaten streak, before scoring resounding wins over nationally-ranked California (42-3) and Washington State (52-6), chalking up a margin of 1038-365 in total yardage. At this moment, Oregon is scoring one point for every 10.9 yards gained.

The Ducks are still ranked #64 nationally in total offense, and that is because the passing attack isn’t one of the most proficient; Jeremiah Masoli (only 748 yards in five games) isn’t necessarily the guy they can lean on at all times. They may not be able to lean on him much at all on Saturday in Pasadena, as Masoli suffered a knee injury against Washington State and is listed as day-to-day. He could not move the ball through the air in last year’s meeting, but did run for 171 yards against UCLA. To coach Chip Kelly’s credit, he has found a way to make up at least some of Blount’s potential yards by inserting LaMichael James, who has rambled for 351 yards the last three games, during which time the Ducks are rolling in the NCAA football lines.

UCLA’s Kevin Craft, who has started the last couple of games under center, was adequate, tossing only one interception in 58 throws after being picked off 20 times last season. He was in there as a substitute. Highly-touted freshman Kevin Prince, who had been sitting with a fractured jaw, has been cleared to play and will be in action on Saturday. He helped engineer wins over San Diego State and Tennessee.

As inconsistent as the Bruins’ offense can be, UCLA’s defense is a very difficult unit to deal with. Teams don’t generally throw against them (only 52% completions allowed, 8 INT’s, only 2 TD’s). So Oregon will have to work against a front that has permitted only 2.8 yards a rush. The Ducks are operating at a high level of efficiency (five different rushers scored TD’s against WSU), but it is still going to be a tough slog.

UCLA has covered six of its last seven games at the Rose Bowl, and is real trouble getting points (10-2 ATS as a home dog in the last dozen). We’re going with the Bruins, the 6.5-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA football lines.
