Texas has been tested a little more with each of the games it has played, but as far as its non-conference schedule is concerned, you couldn’t classify it as being all that challenging. The Longhorns have coasted through Louisiana-Monroe and Wyoming, both of whom offered just token resistance and were outgained by wide margins (535 total yards, in fact), yet the ‘Horns have missed the cover in both those games, as well as their Big 12 opener against Texas Tech, where they allowed Taylor Potts to pass for 420 yards.

As far as the most high-profile Longhorn is concerned, Colt McCoy has been off to an uninspired start, when compared to his 2008 numbers. The Heisman Trophy candidate is 68% accurate, but he has thrown four interceptions already, which is half of his total for the entire ’08 season.

McCoy’s rushing stats are down, which is a very noteworthy development. He had 561 yards last year, compared to just 46 this season. He needs some run support, but he’s got few backs pitching in, there’s no one you can call a “go-to” guy.

Texas is going to have some success rushing the passer, with people like Sergio Kindle, who has yet to work up a real head of steam. UTEP has sustained a couple of tough losses at home, where the Miners disappointed against a retooling Buffalo team and found themselves relatively clueless against Kansas.

Yet, junior quarterback Trevor Vittatoe has thrown only one interception in 102 attempts, and the secondary that is not as sieve-like against the pass.

Texas obviously aspires to the BCS Championship game at the end of the season, and with Oklahoma and USC having fallen by the wayside there is certainly a door open for them to proceed on to a game with Florida.

It is, however, questionable as to how “interested” they are in blowing out opponents. These are big numbers, and they leave big backdoor opportunities, especially if the Horns go to the second tam at some pointy. We’ll take UTEP plus the points in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.
