Let’s ask ourselves a question – was the fact that Virginia was able to gain 312 yards passing on Southern Miss last week more of a reflection on the Cavaliers getting themselves a little more together on the offensive end with the spread, or on the fact that the Southern Miss defense was springing some leaks? A little of both, I would imagine.

Larry Fedora, who took over the coaching reins at Southern Miss after a long stint by Jeff Bower, is no stranger to what Kansas can do under Mark Mangino, as he served as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State for two years. Todd Reesing, the Kansas quarterback, may be too small for the NFL, but he is dandy as a collegian, completing 64% of his career passes. He’s on that track this season, hitting 66 of 102 attempts. He has a pair of receivers at his disposal that surpasses whatever Southern Miss faces in Conference USA (even from Houston and Tulsa) in Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier, who both had over a thousand yards last season.

There is something else Southern Miss is going to have to deal with here, and that is the way Kansas can move the ball on the GROUND these days. Jake Sharp was the leading returnee in the backfield, and he is now joined by freshman Toben Opurum to give, theoretically anyway, Kansas its best balance during Reesing’s tenure.

All of this excitement, however, has to be soft, because as of this analysis, Briscoe was involved in an unusual brawl which took place between KU football and basketball players which left Tyshawn Taylor, one of the Jayhwaks’ outstanding freshman hoopsters last year, in the hospital with a broken thumb.

Since there were reportedly about ten basketball players involved, we have to believe close to that many football players were in the melee as well. One of those that was identified was Chris Harris, a safety. In addition to this, Sharp, who has a calf injury, is going to be a game-time decision.

If Briscoe gets disciplined, that means DeAndre Brown of Southern Miss is the top receiving threat on the field, and certainly the Eagles own one of the best running backs in the country in Damion Fletcher. We respect Kansas’ 16-6 ATS record in its last 22 as a home favorite, but Southern Miss can hang here. If they are aspiring to be a “BCS buster” this is the time to show it. We’re grabbing the points with Southern Miss, the 13.5-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA betting odds.
