BetUS NCAA Betting Odds: BYU -17.5, Total 54

Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

BYU has covered two of its last ten games
BYU has won 21 of its last 24 games SU
BYU has covered two of its last eight road games
BYU has won nine of its last 12 road games SU
TUL has lost its last nine games SU
TUL has covered two of its last ten games
TUL has played seven of its last eight games UNDER the total
TUL is 0-5 ATS in its last five home games
TUL has lost four of its last five home games SU

The savvy handicapper, when thinking of the NCAA betting odds, is immediately thinking “letdown.” That’s because BYU scored the biggest victory in the program’s history – or at least since they beat Michigan in the Holiday Bowl to clinch the national title in 1984 – when they conquered Oklahoma last week. That win had less to do with the injury to Sam Bradford than many people think. BYU’s defense really came to the party, holding the Sooners, who had five straight 60-point games going into the BCS title game in January – to 265 total yards, and they also did a good job of compensating for injuries on the offensive line, and that is how they beat the NCAA betting odds easily.

Max Hall was 26 of 38 for 329 yards, and though he threw two interceptions, he made the right plays at the right times. There was no running game, but Harvey Unga, who sat out the opener, should be back in action for this one, which helps BYU’s chances in the NCAA betting odds. Tulane was a team that everyone knew was going to be defensively challenged in its opener, but GJ Kinne, who was making his debut for Tulsa, looked like a pro against the Green Wave, completing 75% of his passes, and running for 77 yards.

It won’t help Tulane that safety Corey Sonnier, the most experienced member of the secondary, is still serving a suspension. The quarterback matchup between Joe Kemp, who has thrown 72 passes in his collegiate career, and Max Hall, who threw for 35 TD’s and 3957 yards last season, is really a mismatch.

So the question is whether BYU, who is just coming off this game with Oklahoma and has Florida State on deck, could be caught in a bit of a “sandwich,” which can be deadly as a “trap” in the NCAA betting odds. Sure, it’s conceivable, but don’t chalk that up as an automatic. The Cougars have been longing for a BCS opportunity, for themselves and the Mountain West, and the road toward that is now pretty clear. A letup may not be in the cards against a Tulane team that probably doesn’t have the ability to render more than passive resistance, and which doesn’t have much of a “home field advantage” either in the cavernous Superdome, dropping their last five against the number in the NCAA betting odds.

We’re going to lay the points with BYU, the 17.5-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA betting odds.
