Week 15 – ARMY BLACK KNIGHTS (5-6) vs. NAVY MIDSHIPMEN (8-4)

Date: Saturday, Dec. 12, 2:30 pm EST
Site: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
BetUS LINE: Navy -14

Preview:

The annual Army-Navy game rolls around as sure as the sun will rise, and serves as a nice bit of appetite-whetting for the bowl season. As has been customary lately, the Naval Academy looks like the stronger football outfit in this match-up. This season, Navy has the best record of the FBS Independents (tsk tsk, Notre Dame) and has been using its customary triple-option offense to rack up huge yards on the ground.

The offense certainly has a little more credibility after former coach Paul Johnson made the upgrade to Georgia Tech and proved it can be successful in the BCS conferences.

The attack funnels through QB Ricky Dobbs. While Dobbs has only attempted 84 throws all season, he’s put up 913 yards rushing. Fullback Vince Murray has buttressed the rushing attack with 884 on 159 carries; a healthy 5.6 yards a clip.

Though the Black Knights’ defense isn’t lousy, teams have trouble stopping Navy’s running game despite knowing exactly what they are going to get. Combine this with Army’s pitiful offense, and it seems clear that one set of cadets will be jubilant on the sidelines. They likely won’t be the Armed Forces.

To even have a chance, Army’s freshman QB Trent Steelman will have to play the game of his young career. His team probably won’t win the time of possession battle either, so he would have to be ruthlessly efficient through the air and on the ground to even have a sniff in this rivalry game.

Although Navy’s leading receiver only has nine grabs on the year, it doesn’t matter. Navy exercises a tried, tested and true formula and we no doubt will see another case study of it this Saturday in Philly.
