Last season’s meeting with undefeated Utah Utes was a nightmare for BYU quarterback Max Hall. In that game he threw five interceptions, for the first and only time in his career, and Utah turned a game in which both sides had about the same amount of yardage into a 48-24 romp. So BYU has something of a revenge motive as they are laying more than a touchdown in the college football betting lines.
Both of these teams have something in common: they were both destroyed by physically-superior TCU, who clearly showed who’s boss in the Mountain West this season. As far as everyone else is concerned, well, as we know, BYU scored that big upset in the season opener over Oklahoma, which was marred somewhat by the injury loss of Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford. Only two weeks later, Hall was throwing three interceptions against Florida State, which returned one of them back for a touchdown. On the season, Hall has been intercepted 14 times, although to his credit, he is on a run where he has thrown for 300 or more yards for three consecutive games (with two of those resulting in wins in the college football betting lines). In last week’s 38-21 win over the Air Force Academy, Hall threw for five touchdowns, and hit seven different receivers a minimum of three times.
It’s been a nice bonus for the BYU Cougars that Harvey Unga has been able to play through injuries, although he hasn’t ut up big numbers lately (85, 50 and 67 yards the last three games). As for the Utes, they lost running back Matt Asiata early in the season, but that only opened the door for Eddie Wide to become a valuable performer. Since being inserted into the lineup, Wise has had six 100-yard games, and has a good chance to go over the thousand-yard mark in this contest.
Some of the skepticism surrounding Utah concerns the quarterback spot, as Jordan Wynn, a freshman, assumed the starting job after Terrance Cain, a former national junior college player of the year, was benched at halftime of a game with Wyoming. Coach Kyle Whittingham says that Wynn has as much football savvy as anyone he’s seen at Utah, but the kid is rather spindly, and had to eat himself up to 195 pounds. So far he’s hitting 57% of his passes with five TD’s and almost eight yards an attempt. Certainly the advantage here goes to BYU.
But that may not be enough to lay points in this instance. BYU may have certain edges on the offensive side, but Utah is plenty capable of keeping things close with its defense (15 INT’s, 51% completions allowed), and as recent history indicates, the Utes respond in this series (covering for of last five meetings). We’ll be willing to take the points with Utah, the 7.5-point underdog in the BetUS college football betting lines.
