It would be hard to fashion a better result than what Syracuse achieved for itself last week against Rutgers, in what was a sensational college football sportsbook win. They held the Scarlet Knights, who came into the game with a 7-2 record, to 130 total yards, sacked Tom Savage nine times, intercepted him twice, ran for 213 yards, passed for 211 behind Greg Paulus’ 13-for-16 (almost perfect balance) and had 40 minutes in possession time.

The Orange jumped off to a 14-0 lead and never looked back, rolling to a 31-13 win over a team that is going to a bowl game. This is the kind of performance Doug Marrone envisioned when he took over the program.

History, however, indicates that it is going to be difficult for them to keep that up. In the three previous games, they tallied just 26 points, and dropped embarrassing double-digit decisions to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and South Florida.

Is Connecticut in that class? Possibly. After all, the Huskies can run it with the best teams in the conference, using the combination of Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon (1800 yards combined) to chalk up real estate. Of course, the Orange has allowed less than three yards per carry.

Syracuse has suffered some attrition on defense, and now the latest is that middle linebacker Derrell Smith is out. That’s a challenge for Marrone, a former NFL defensive coordinator, as he goes up against those college football sportsbook odds.

Sure, the Huskies could use this win to get bowl eligible, but I really have to wonder how much U-Conn has left in the gas tank after having to go to the wire with another nail-biter, this one against Notre Dame, which coach Randy Edsall called the biggest win in the history of the program.

Syracuse has at least gotten some high-percentage passing from Greg Paulus (73% over his last five games) and can move the chains with running back Delonte Carter. Connecticut does not possess a shutdown defensive unit, and Zach Fraser, who was pressed into service at QB after the more capable Cody Endres got injured, is less than 50% accurate.

We believe Syracuse can put together enough to keep this game relatively competitive, and so we’re going to grab the points with Syracuse, the 13.5-point favorite in the BetUS college football odds.
