The Cowboys lost star quarterback Zac Robinson due to an injury, and then endured a few ineffective series from backup signal caller Alex Cate. Someone needed to step up for Mike Gundy’s team if it was going to remain in the running for an at-large BCS bowl berth.

Enter Brandon Weeden. The 26-year-old, who spent a number of years playing minor-league baseball and did not use up his college eligibility, came off the bench to torch Colorado’s secondary in a 31-28 Oklahoma State win.

Weeden hit Keith Toston on a 47-yard scoring play to give OSU a 24-21 edge with 11:24 left in regulation. Then, after a kickoff return put the Buffaloes back in front at 28-24, Weeden delivered one more dagger, a 28-yard dart to Justin Blackmon with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma: The Week That Was

The Sooners’ already-miserable season deteriorated even more in Lubbock, Tex., this past Saturday, as Bob Stoops’ bunch got blown away by Texas Tech, 41-13. A 2009 campaign marked by injuries witnessed yet another trip to the infirmary, as OU lost freshman center Ben Habern for the year with a broken fibula.

Offensive linemen Brody Eldridge and Jarvis Jones had already been knocked out for the year, so when Habern went down against Texas Tech, Oklahoma lost even more blocking and pass protecting prowess. The Sooners – who have already lost their stud quarterback (Sam Bradford) and their star tight end (Jermaine Gresham) – are plumbing the bottom of their depth chart on offense. The fact that their normally reliable defense wilted against Tech – giving up 549 yards and 388 through the air – certainly didn’t help.

The Week That Is:

Who the heck knows what’s going to happen in this game? All the injuries to key people on both sides make it very difficult to evaluate this season-ending contest. Moreover, the name of this rivalry –the Bedlam Series – offers a recipe for volatility and unpredictability. Last year’s game featured more than 100 points, and Oklahoma needed every one of its 61 points to feel truly safe. In 2006, the Cowboys battled the Sooners neck and neck before falling 27-21 in a spirited battle.

Zac Robinson will start at quarterback for Oklahoma State, but Oklahoma’s defense – fresh from its embarrassing outing against Texas Tech – will be out for blood in this game. The heavily wounded Sooners aren’t likely to score much in their own right, which means that this game should turn into a 20-17 slugfest, one way or the other.

Neither team is healthy enough or consistent enough to run away with this in-state showdown. Oklahoma State does own a No. 12 national ranking, but that lofty position is partly the product of a weak and diluted Big 12 Conference. Take Oklahoma to win, but a spread of almost 10 points is ridiculous.
