These two teams have enjoyed opposite emotions in the past couple weeks. Southern Cal was crestfallen after losing handily to Oregon two weeks ago, while Stanford is ecstatic after topping that very same Oregon team just last week. This, however, is the ideal opportunity for the Trojans to pull their tail out from between their collective legs.

Southern Cal has been dominant in the Pac-10 essentially throughout this decade and it’s strange to picture a Pac-10 conference title that USC doesn’t win. The Trojans did not win in convincing style last week against Arizona State, squeaking by the Sun Devils 14-9. But they all count, and Pete Carroll’s juggernaut could wrest some more momentum by beating Stanford convincingly.
However, this Stanford team is not the Pac-10 also-ran we are used to seeing. Stand-out redshirt freshman QB Andrew Luck and powerful tailback Toby Gerhart combine to lead a strong Cardinal attack. Combine that with a fairly veteran defensive unit and Stanford currently poses a tough challenge for any team in the conference. The Cardinal may have caught the Ducks napping last week, but they’ll have to play a near-flawless game on both sides of the ball to beat talent-laden USC in their house.
I look for the offense to start clicking for USC this week and I also expect defensive stalwarts Taylor Mays and Chris Galippo to raise Luck’s overall stress level. This can be a statement game for the Trojans to show their fans they plan to finish the season strong, with dates remaining versus crosstown rival UCLA and upstart Arizona. So long as they don’t get caught looking ahead (which they shouldn’t) look for the Trojans to re-assert themselves a little bit this week.
