Georgia Tech couldn’t possibly be more red-hot, could it? The Yellow Jackets have topped 400 rushing yards in three of their last five games, over which time they have averaged 380 yards, and that has certainly been reflected in the results. Last time out, though, they needed overtime to dispatch Wake Forest, as Riley Skinner was able to bust the secondary for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

Josh Nesbitt has not had to throw the football to much lately, and indeed has completed only 19 passes in his last five games. Can Duke make him go to the air? Well, the Blue Devils have not been that bad when defending the run, giving up 139 yards a game and 3.8 yards a carry. They had the opportunity to play an Army team that uses the option in the season’s second week, and did a credible job, allowing 266 yards on 57 carries in a 35-19 win, but we know that the Cadets don’t have the kind of personnel to operate their offense like Georgia Tech does.

Duke has no running game. That’s their problem. They go for only 68 yards a game, and only one team in Division I football has produced less. This offense will live and die with quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, who has been tutored well by coach David Cutcliffe. Lewis is a 62% passer, who has thrown only five interceptions in 329 attempts. He was stymied by North Carolina last week, however, as he had just 113 yards through the air, and Duke did not cover in college football betting.

Georgia Tech’s secondary has not been a strong one. The Jackets have been pretty easy to move on, giving up 19 touchdowns and 61% completions. Of course, when you run the option, it’s pretty hard to prepare for wide-open passing attacks.

Lewis needs to be protected well, but if he is, Duke, which hung in there with Virginia Tech and scored wins over N.C. State, Maryland and Virginia, have the ability to hang. For last year’s 27-0 shutout loss, which took place in Atlanta, they’re looking for a little payback. We’ll go with home underdog Duke, the 12-point underdog in the BetUS college football betting odds.

You have to give Duke credit for a basketball school to actually still be in the hunt for a shot in the ACC football Championship game. Unfortunately Georgia Tech will put an end to those hopes with a sound thrashing of the Blue Devils
