Michigan State has gone from a dark horse title contender to a team looking to salvage a bowl game appearance. MSU needs to win two of their final three games just to have a shot at, say, the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl in nearby Detroit, and that’s the last thing MSU fans wanted to see going into the season.

Meanwhile, Western Michigan has fallen from a possible MAC Title contender before the year led by NFL prospect Tim Hiller at QB to a below average team, just like Michigan State. Both teams come into the season at 4-5 needing wins to finish on a positive note.

MSU is a 20 ½ point favorite going into the game in what could be a shootout, as the over/under is listed at 55 in the Sportsbook.

For MSU to cover the spread, they’ll need to be multi-dimensional on offense, using the run to set up the pass. That’s because coach Mark Dantonio prefers to play that way. Truth be told, the Spartans could go shotgun and four wideouts and just run Western off the field as the Broncos are still breaking in an entirely new secondary in 2009 and don’t have the talent to stop good receivers like what MSU has right now. The run game will be key, and MSU is showing signs of getting it going behind freshmen backs Edwin Baker and Larry Caper.

MSU should be able to manhandle the Western front four in this game.

MSU had beaten 13 straight MAC opponents until their heartbreaking loss to Central Michigan this year on an onside kick and late field goal, and they should be able to get back to their winning ways in this one.

Western Michigan has gone over the total points number in its last five games as double-digit underdogs and the trend should continue in this one. WMU will pass some on MSU’s bad secondary but eventually MSU will get to Hiller on linebacker blitzes and force some mistakes.

Meanwhile, WMU has no one who can cover the likes of Mark Dell and Blair White. MSU should be able to win this one big in a high noon shootout at Spartan Stadium.

Our pick: MSU (-20 ½) and the over (55)
