Two teams that are looking to regain their midseason form will square off Saturday at Landshark Stadium, when the Miami Hurricanes host the Virginia Cavaliers.

For Miami, all the talk early in the season was that “the U,” was back, although the Hurricanes have hardly looked vintage in the last few weeks. Two Saturday’s ago, Miami battled back and forth all afternoon with Clemson, before ultimately falling 40-37 in overtime. And last weekend, they needed to mount a rally late against Wake Forest, beating the Demon Deacons 28-27 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

All the talk with this Miami team starts with Jacory Harris, and the way the sophomore is playing, that’s the way it should be. On the season, Harris has thrown for over 2000 yards, and 16 touchdowns, while completing 62 percent of his passes. He had one of the best games of his 2009 season last week against Wake, when he threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Miami’s running game is led by the two-headed attack of Graig Cooper and Javaris James, who have combined for over 700 yards on the season. James sat out last week’s game, and it is yet to be determined if he’ll play against Virginia.

As for Virginia, it’s been another tough year for coach Al Groh, and if the Cavaliers don’t turn things around soon it may be his last. On the season, they are 3-5, and have lost their last two, including a 28-17 against Duke last weekend.

The problems for the Cavaliers have come virtually entirely on the offensive side of the football, as they have been unable to pass or run through eight games so far. On the season, Virginia is ranked 100th or worse in the four major offensive categories in college football: total offense, scoring offense, passing offense and passing defense, and have averaged just 13 points in their last two defeats.

Where Virginia will hope to stay close in this game will be thanks to a defense that makes up for the offense’s inefficiencies. They are ranked 40th in college football, giving up just 21 points per game, and also 19th in passing defense, allowing just 175 yards per game.

While few doubt that Miami should be able to win this game, the question becomes, will Virginia’s offense score enough to cover the 13 points they are getting against the Hurricanes?

It’s hard to say. On one hand, that Virginia pass defense has been excellent, and when you couple it with a Miami rushing offense that only accumulated 26 yards against Wake Forest, there’s certainly the possibility that this one remains close.

On the other hand, how many points should we expect this offense to score, against a fast and aggressive defense?

If this game was at Scott Stadium on the Virginia campus, it might be one thing to expect the Cavaliers to stay close. But in Miami, it’s hard to see them remaining competitive against a Miami team that is looking to get redemption after two poor performances.

Our Pick: Miami -13
