Houston: The Week That Was

The Houston Cougars surrendered 43 points to Southern Miss. Coach Kevin Sumlin’s declawed defense – which allowed 58 points to UTEP in Houston’s only loss of the season – gave up 608 yards to the visiting Golden Eagles this past Saturday. UH blew an 18-point lead by conceding 21 fourth-quarter points to its Conference USA rival.

None of those shortcomings ultimately mattered, though, because Houston’s offense excelled. Cougar quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender Case Keenum went 44-of-54 for 559 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. The Cougs rolled up 750 yards and answered the bell whenever Southern Miss rallied.

After USM tied the score at 43-all on a touchdown with 57 seconds left in regulation, Keenum led a scoring drive of his own that culminated just 36 seconds later, on a 28-yard strike to Patrick Edwards. Houston 50, Southern Miss 43 with 1,358 yards of total offense. Welcome to Conference USA.

Tulsa: The Week That Was

The Golden Hurricane have been blown off course in their last two games. Viewed as the foremost challenger to Houston in the preseason, Todd Graham’s group has fallen from grace in losses at UTEP and, this past weekend, to Southern Methodist on home turf.

While it’s true that SMU is a much-improved team under June Jones, it’s hard to understand how Tulsa could go down so meekly, in a 27-13 game that was appreciably decisive. The Golden Hurricane watched their offense implode, as quarterback G.J. Kinne was benched after a miserable day at the office. Kinne went 2-of-10 for only 10 yards, with two interceptions, before being pulled in favor of backup Jacob Bower. The loss at UTEP (on Oct. 21) could have been viewed as an isolated stumble, but a two-game conference losing streak suggests that more stormy times lie ahead for the Golden Hurricane.

The Week That Is:

This game is certainly dangerous for Houston; the Cougars are on the road, and their defense has buckled in the face of potent offenses. If UTEP – a 3-5 club – could ring up 58 points against them, the Cougars can’t take any opposing offense for granted. The fact that this game represents Tulsa’s season, and offers the Golden Hurricane their last chance to stay in the Conference USA West Division race, will only make the home team more inspired to knock off Kevin Sumlin’s crew from Southeastern Texas.

Ultimately, the defining aspect of this game is that Tulsa’s offense, which will need to keep pace with Case Keenum and Co., enters this showdown in a state of considerable (if not complete) disarray. Kinne has been making shaky decisions at quarterback this season, and has not learned to throw balls away when plays break down. Tulsa will throw the kitchen sink at Houston, and make the Cougars sweat; but because the Golden Hurricane lack an accurate thrower, the kitchen sink won’t directly hit Houston. The visitors might get wounded, but they’ll survive their trip to the state of Oklahoma.
