Big Ten 2010-2011 Football Previews: Wisconsin Badgers

Coach: Bret Bielema
2009 Record: 10-3

Wisconsin Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +4000

The Badgers of Wisconsin had a very nice year last year, although it could have been a special one. A close loss to Northwestern and a blown chance at Ohio State cost the Badgers a chance at a possible terrific year. Still, Bielema and the Badgers faithful have to like the way the team has come together. Expectations are high for this year.

There are 18 returning starters from last year’s 10-3 team. On the offensive side of the football 10 starters are back from a team that led the Big Ten in scoring a year ago.

Scott Tolzien stepped in last year and cemented his spot at the quarterback spot, and he should be ready to lead the Badgers once again this year.

Team Strengths:

As a whole, the offensive side of the football can be considered a real strength for this team. More specifically, the offensive line and the running backs should be tremendous this year. Gabe Carimi is a preseason first team All-American according to Lindy’s Football Preview. John Moffitt, another offensive lineman for Wisconsin, is on the second team list. The Badgers are as stout as they came on the offensive line.

In the backfield there is tons of depth. John Clay will get the most carries, but Montee Ball and Zach Brown are very good runners as well. Both Brown and Ball would start for many teams in the Big Ten.

Receiving shouldn’t be that much of an issue this year either, with Nick Toon stepping up in a big way. Al Toon’s son is proving in workouts that he could easily be one of the best in the conference.

Lance Kendricks appears ready to have a big year at the tight end spot, which should help the Badgers immensely, since Tolzien loves to target the tight end.

Team Weaknesses:

One place where the Badgers will be weaker than last year is the defensive line. O’Brien Schofield will be missed badly and the defensive tackles may be a little suspect. The linebackers are fairly experienced, but they aren’t stars. Expect the Badgers run defense to be a little weaker than normal.

The special teams need to get a little more consistent for the Badgers.

They haven’t won the field position battle as often as they need to, and in the match ups with teams like Iowa and Ohio State, that is about as important as anything.

2010-2011 Wisconsin Football Prediction: 11-2

This year’s Badgers football squad is very good. I think this is a top ten team in the nation. I fully expect them to be in every single game this year and they could certainly upset a team like Ohio State or Iowa. I believe they have the potential to go 12-1, but I feel like the lack of a run stopper on defense will more than likely keep them from going unbeaten.

Expect John Clay and that bruising Badgers offense to frustrate a whole lot of teams this year by chewing up yards and controlling the football.
