Coach: Bret Bielema
2008 Record: 7-6

The Badgers had a tremendously rollercoaster season in ’08. They started out 3-0, and then dropped a game to Michigan they simply let slip away.

Another heartbreaking 20-17 loss ensued the next week; those two losses seemed to break Wisconsin’s soul. The next weeks they got pounded by Penn State and Iowa, and then finished out by winning four of their last five. Bielema and the clan will need way more consistency if Wisconsin is to have hope of being a factor in the Big Ten.

Last season, the Badgers tried musical chairs at quarterback between Allan Evridge, Dustin Sherer and Curt Phillips. The latter name on the list had the last crack at the job, and this year it is Phillips’ to lose. While one power back, P.J. Hill, has rode off in the sunset, another, John Clay (6″2, 247) is prepared to take a starter’s load. David Gilreath doubles as a wideout and return specialist and TE Garrett Graham is very solid.

There are quite a few losses on defense, but leading tackler Jaevery McFadden returns to lead the Badgers’ D.

Team Strengths
The defensive back seven should be strong with McFadden and vets like safeties Jay Valai and Chris Maragos, and INT leader CB Niles Brinkley. Their ranging, ball-hawking and coverage skills must be up to snuff because the D-line is much less experienced.

At least they return sack leader O’Brien Schofield. Clay should be a battering ram and Graham led all receivers last year with 40 grabs.

Team Weaknesses
Phillips should win the job, but the QB position is in flux and he will need to produce. In fact, a worry likely at the front of the coaches’ minds is steady production from under center. 2008’s fantastic offensive line is down some notches with the departure of three key cogs. Someone other than Schofield has to do something on the defensive line.

As mentioned, 2008 was a strange season in Madison, where the team simply seemed to lose all the wind in its sails mid-season.

The Badgers have their usual tough mid-season slate (Mich. St, Ohio St., Iowa) and although plenty of talent left by way of graduation and the NFL, Wisconsin can improve on its record in 2009.

2009 Wisconsin Badgers Record Prediction: 8-5

There are too many teams in the Big Ten that are better than Wisconsin this year, so their only hope is to play the role of spoiler and knock one of these teams out of the championship chase.
