Sun Belt Conference Football Previews: Western Kentucky

Head Coach: Willy Taggert
2009 Record: 0-12

Western Kentucky Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +900000

The Hilltoppers went 0-12 in their first full-time season as an FBS football team. Interestingly, Dave Elson only got the one year at the helm and was replaced by Willy Taggert. It will be up to Taggert to help this team climb the ladder and start being a factor in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Hilltoppers weren’t a bit competitive to start the 2009 season, but they came close to winning some games at the end of the year. There is enough talent returning here to think that this team should certainly at least get into the win column this year.

How much of a step forward can they take?

Team Strengths:

Bobby Rainey is a strength for this team at the tailback position. Rainey is quick to the hole and should be able to help this team have a solid running game in 2010.

The defensive line is deep and the team is making the switch to the 4-3 defense because of this. It is likely that Western Kentucky will be able to generate a little bit better pass rush this season, and the line should be a little better against the run as well.

The team has two very solid tight ends in Jack Doyle and Tristan Jones. Both are talented pass receivers that should provide a nice safety net for the offense.

Team Weaknesses:

The defense as a whole should be considered a major weakness for this team. In 2009, they gave up 40 points per game, second worst in the country.

The quarterback spot is a question mark, as last year’s starter went down with an injury in the offseason. A junior college transfer, Matt Pelesasa looks ready to go, but a new quarterback is always a concern.

The offensive line and the wide receivers are both suspect, which means the new quarterback probably won’t have the weapons necessary to have a big year.

The cornerbacks have proven that they are unable to stay with hardly anyone. The safeties are decent, but they often are being used to help in run support. The team needs a pass rush to take some heat off the entire secondary.

Western Kentucky 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 2-10

I think this team showed enough improvement at the end of last year that they should be expected to win a game or two this season. The defense should be better than last year, but they will still be extremely weak. Rainey needs to stay healthy and the line needs to do a great job in run blocking.

Expect another long season for Western Kentucky, but I think they win a couple games in the Sun Belt Conference this year.
