West Virginia had plenty of trouble scoring in their game against Oklahoma in Week 2. In Week 3 they turned to redshirt freshman Ford Childress, and had no such problem.

Childress completed 25 of 41 passes for 359 and three touchdowns in his first career collegiate start, leading the Mountaineers to a 41-7 win over Georgia State. It wasn’t all good news for Childress. He missed some throws, and fired an interception in Georgia State territory. Running back Charles Sims added 116 yards and a score on the ground. In the end, the Mountaineers totalled 604 yards of offense.

The West Virginia defense had a solid day, limiting Georgia State to just 220 yards of offense, but did have some trouble with running back Travis Evans, who rushed for 118 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown run – Georgia State’s only scoring play in the game.

Long-time Connecticut coach Randy Edsall got his first win against the program he used to be a part of in Week 3. Maryland quarterback C.J. Brown threw for 277 yards and a score, adding 122 yards and an additional score on the ground. His favorite target on the night was receiver Stefon Diggs, who racked up 110 yards receiving and a touchdown. Running back Brandon Ross added 95 yards on the ground in the game, but also had a fumble in Maryland territory, and was stuffed on a fourth down play in Connecticut territory. The team compiled 501 yards of offense, 319 yards of which came in the first half, exceeding 500 yards for the third time in as many weeks. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Maryland defense had trouble with Connecticut receiver Shakim Phillips, who piled up 10 receptions for 178 yards and a score, and they also allowed quarterback Chandler Whitmer to throw for a career-high 349 yards. Senior Dexter McDougle made a big play for the team in the second half, intercepting a pass and returning it 49-yards and a score, one of two interceptions he recorded on the day.

On the surface it appeared that West Virginia solved a lot of their problems last week, but a closer look shows that there are still plenty of issues for the Mountaineers to work through.

On the flip side, the Maryland offense has consistently been able to churn out yards thus far, while their defense should be able to take advantage of any mistakes young Childress might throw their way.

The Terrapins are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

The play: Maryland -4.5
