Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: West Virginia Mountaineers

Coach: Bill Stewart
2009 Record: 9-4

West Virginia Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +7500

In the past few seasons, the transition from spread guru Rich Rodriguez (a native West Virginian who defecated where he ate by jumping ship to Michigan) to Bill Stewart hasn’t been seamless. The Mountaineers fell short against Florida State 33-21 in last year’s Gator Bowl.

However, this is the most talented team Stewart has coached in his three years holding the clipboards and a Big East title is attainable for these mountain men.

Team Strengths:

The offense is going to ride on the coattails of senior Noel Devine, who has the explosiveness of a hydrogen bomb. Devine racked up 1,463 yards and 13 scores in 2009, averaging a healthy 6.1 yards a clip. Versatile senior slot man Jock Sanders is also back, who was last year’s leading receiver with 72 grabs.

On defense, LBs Pat Lazear, J.T. Thomas and DT Chris Neild are all-conference at their respective spots. Sophomore kicker Tyler Bitancurt is a stud; sought after out of high school and nailing 13-15 FGs as a fresh-faced frosh.

Team Weaknesses:

With sophomore Geno Smith, WVU breaks in a new starter under center. Yet, last year’s QB Jarrett Brown didn’t put up world-beating numbers, so there might not be much of a decline. The passing game is also somewhat flaccid thanks to the lack of receiver depth. Apart from Sanders, this unit is not much to write home about.

The Mountaineers did recruit highly-touted freshman Ivan McCartney (a cousin of yappy NFLer Chad Ochocinco) and he will need to play a role sooner rather than later.

2010-2011 West Virginia Football Prediction: 11-2

This year’s WV squad has an excellent defense, quite possibly the best in the conference. If Devine stays healthy, the Mountaineers will also have a running game capable of gouging any opponent.

In the Big East, Pitt has a great team and Cincinnati/USF/Rutgers can always rock the boat, but the Mountaineers have a great shot at usurping a conference championship and – who knows? – maybe some BCS implications.
