Really, Auburn No. 1 in the BCS standings?

For the record, Oregon was No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday for the second week in a row and has the nation’s No. 1 offense, averaging 569 yards and 55 points a game. All that and still No. 2?

Could it be the fact that Oregon ranks just 114th when it comes to time of possession, with an average of just 26 minutes? Or does that mean the Eugene Machine is just extremely efficient in demolishing its opponents, much like they did during Thursday night’s 60-13 shelling of UCLA.

The Ducks once again made it look easy rolling up a 32-3 lead before halftime. Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel had just one word to describe the Ducks performance, “ impressive.”

Quarterback Darron Thomas threw for a career-high 308 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 48 yards for Oregon, while RB LaMichael James ran for 123 yards and two scores.

James is the nation’s top rusher, averaging 161 yards a game, and is quickly rising through the ranks as a top Heisman Trophy candidate.

With just five games remaining, Chip Kelly’s men are taking their upcoming bout with the Trojans very seriously, with some players even being quoted saying that it’s the biggest of their 2010 schedule.

The Trojans, despite their ineligibility for the postseason, are putting equal emphasis on this contest as they will look to build on last week’s 48-14 rout of California that snapped USC’s two-game losing streak and landed them back into the AP poll at No. 24 despite having the week off.

The Trojans ran the G-Bears through the shredder as the offense racked up 589 total yards.

SoCal native Matt Barkley passed for 352 yards and a school-record five touchdowns, earning the Pac-10 offensive player of the week honors.

The Trojans defense was also impressive, holding Cal scoreless until late in the third quarter, as USC led 21-0 before the G-Bears had even managed a single first down.

Last season then-No.10 Oregon rolled up 613 yards defeating the No. 4 Trojans 47-20 at Autzen Stadium, on its way to claiming the Pac-10 championship, ending a seven-year run for the Trojans.

So to say USC is not up to avenging that loss would be a grave mistake.

The Ducks seemed to have survived the curse of the No.1’s, but all of the other upsets of No.1 teams happened on the road. This week, Oregon and Auburn, the two teams that hold some sort of No.1 ranking, both go on the road.

While I think both the Tigers and the Ducks will win their respective games, I feel that after Oregon’s dominating performance over the vaunted Trojans this weekend, they will finally earn the respect of the being No. 1 in the BCS rankings as well as the polls.

Oregon is going to take this USC game for sure. They need to step up and show the country why they are serious title contenters.
