Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Week 9 Betting Preview

Week 9 AP Top 25

The Week 9 AP Top 25 college football rankings were released on Sunday. A slew of upsets on the weekend led to plenty of movement throughout the rankings, with the exception of Alabama, who is firmly entrenched in the top spot.

Florida State climbed ahead two spots with their big win, while Missouri and Baylor made big leaps forward into the top 10. The SEC took the biggest hit in a week in which the No. 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 ranked teams each lost their game. Each of the top 10-ranked teams is in action this weekend so we could see some more movement a week from now.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams and their chances of moving up, or down on Sunday when the next set of rankings is released.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (7-0, previous: 1)

Alabama received 55 of 60 first place votes once against this week after a 52-0 drubbing of Arkansas. In a week in which the top SEC teams struggled, Alabama didn’t have any trouble. This week they’ll play another slumping SEC team, although one that is coming off an upset win, hosting Tennessee as 28-point favorites.

2. Oregon Ducks (7-0, previous: 2)

Oregon wasn’t happy with what they saw from Washington State over the weekend, but they still came away with a 24-point win, and quarterback Marcus Mariota continues to climb in the race for the Heisman Trophy.

This weekend the team will host No. 12 UCLA as 23-point favorites. The Ducks are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games.

3. Florida State Seminoles (6-0, previous: 5)

The Seminoles couldn’t have asked for a better effort on Saturday when they went into Death Valley and ripped Clemson to shreds, 51-14. Quarterback Jameis Winston seems to have taken over Johnny Manziel’s spot as the quarterback to watch in college football. They draw another ACC opponent this weekend when they host North Carolina State as 29.5-point favorites. The Wolfpack has played the Seminoles tough, posting a 12-3-1 ATS mark in the past 16 meetings between the teams.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0, previous: 4)

The Buckeyes avoided a scare against Iowa on Saturday and improved to 19-0 under Urban Meyer. They shouldn’t have too much trouble getting to 20-0 when they host Penn State as 14.5-point favorites this weekend.

5. Missouri Tigers (7-0, previous: 14)

The biggest move of the week belongs to Missouri, who moved up nine spots as they move through the toughest part of their schedule with ease. If they can beat South Carolina on Saturday as three-point favorites, they’ll have a legitimate shot at going into their final regular season game, a home contest with Texas A&M, at 11-0. The Tigers are 6-0-1 ATS this season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

6. Baylor Bears (6-0, previous: 12)

Baylor got things back on track on Saturday when they thumped Iowa State, 71-7. This weekend they go to Kansas as 36-point favorites in what should be a fairly one-sided affair.

7. Miami Hurricanes (6-0, previous: 10)

The Hurricanes snuck past North Carolina last week but were still able to move up three spots in the rankings. With possible sanctions coming down on Tuesday and a matchup with Florida State on deck, Miami is in danger of looking past Wake Forest.

8. Stanford Cardinal (6-1, previous: 13)

Stanford won the weekend’s other marquee matchup, handling UCLA’s offense with sound defensive play. They’ll face another strong offense this weekend when they travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State.

9. Clemson Tigers (6-1, previous: 3)

Getting ripped apart by Florida State wasn’t enough to knock Clemson out of the top 10. This weekend they’ll look to get back on track at Maryland as 14-point favorites.

10. Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-0, previous: 16)

Texas Tech was off last week after slipping past West Virginia the week before. This weekend the team may be in a little over their heads when they travel to Norman, where they’ll be 6.5-point underdogs against the 17th-seeded Sooners.
