I actually have to say that the Cougars looked like a better team in their recent loss to then-No.17 Arizona on Saturday.

The defense probably turned in one of its best performances as they held the Wildcats to 352 yards of offense, their lowest total allowed in two seasons. However, the loss was their fifth straight in a row since narrowly beating FCS opponent Montana State back in Week 2. They have since been outscored 194-95.

While I do believe in miracles, it will take a huge one in order to shut down Heisman hopeful, QB Andrew Luck, and a well-rested No. 12 Stanford Cardinal that are coming off a bye weekend carrying a lot of momentum from their thrilling last-second 37-35 home win over USC their last time out.

Luck led a 51-yard drive with one minute remaining setting up a 30-yard field goal from as time expired. He finished the contest completing 20 of 24 passing attempts for 285 yards and three TDs, bringing his season total to 1,538 yards and 16 TDs.

The junior should add some pretty big numbers to that total, as he will receive little resistance from a Cougars defense that despite holding the Wildcats to 352 yards of offense— their lowest total allowed in two seasons – has been surrendering an FBS-worst 493.9 yards per game.

And it’s not just passing the Cougars will have to fear, Stanford’s rushing attack ranks 23rd in the FBS with 210.5 yards per game. Sophomore RB Stepfan Taylor has been on a tear and will look to extend his career-best streak of 100-yard rushing efforts to four during Saturday’s contest.

Offensively, it doesn’t get much better for Washington State who are led by sophomore quarterback Jeff Tuel, who has 1,735 yards and 10 TDs on the season, but managed a season-low 297 yards in the teams loss to the Wildcats. He is averaging 247 yards and one INT per game.

That’s pretty much the extent of the offensive threat as the Cougs ground attack is nearly extinct ranking among the worst in the nation with 80.1 yards per game.

The Cardinal defense should have no problem putting away this game early.

In the teams’ last meeting at Stanford Stadium, the Cardinal won 58-0 on Nov. 1, 2008, and I am pretty sure it the outcome of this contest won’t be much different as the Cougars slide to 14 straight losses in PAC-10 play.
