Both Florida Atlantic and Arkansas State are struggling right now. The Owls—who are 8-point road underdogs—have looked especially bad, but they may get an emotional boost thanks to some good off-the-field news this week. Will it be enough to help them cover this week?

Arkansas State (2-5, 5-2 ATS) finally catches a break this week. The Red Wolves have already played five road games this season, and last week’s 36-34 loss to Indiana was their fourth loss by 10 points or less. The Wolves are hanging around; they’re just not finishing games. But Saturday’s game marks the first of three straight home dates.

The Red Wolves showed some mettle against the Hoosiers, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. They were done in by turnovers, as Ryan Aplin threw two picks and the offense lost a fumble. Arkansas State might have found more success if the running game was even remotely competent; it managed just 61 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, the Wolves have been awful. They’re allowing 472 yards per game, good for 119th among FBS teams. Indiana absolutely scorched them through the air, racking up 382 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Hoosiers running back Trea Burgess also had an impact performance, gaining 102 yards on 19 carries.

Florida Atlantic (1-4, 2-3 ATS) will be playing its third consecutive road game. The Owls enjoyed a much-needed bye last week; they’ve dropped four straight games since winning the opener, including a recent 20-17 loss at Louisiana-Monroe. The offense has been completely inept, averaging just 13.5 points per game during the skid. It’s especially disappointing after the Owls led the Sun Belt in rushing last season. Starting running back Alfred Morris is averaging just 77 yards per game.

The Owls at least got their best defensive performance of the season against Louisiana-Monroe. They racked up five sacks—they had just six entering the game—and it was their fewest points surrendered all year.

Florida Atlantic did get some good news during the bye; it celebrated the groundbreaking of a new, 30,000-seat football stadium, which will open next year. That should give the Owls an emotional boost. They should also be able to get the running game going against Arkansas State, which is allowing 213 yards per game on the ground. Florida Atlantic will keep this close enough to cover.
