Wyoming and BYU’s bowl hopes are hanging by a thread. The winner of their Saturday match up will stay alive, while the loser can likely kiss its postseason hopes goodbye.

Last week, BYU (2-5, 3-5 ATS) was on the wrong end of a  31-3 beating against TCU. The offense has struggled mightily this season, averaging just 14.7 points per game. In the Cougars’ five losses, they’ve averaged just 11.2 points per game. Jake Heaps is in over his head. The quarterback has one touchdown to six interceptions this season. Against the Horned Frogs, just two of his 14 completions went to receivers or tight ends; Heaps is far too content to dump the ball off, which explains his paltry 91 yards on 30 attempts against TCU. The round game is averaging a respectable 132 yard per outing, so pressure is on Heaps to step up his game.

The “D” is allowing 28 points per outing, but much of the blame belongs to the offense, which too often goes three-and-out and sends an exhausted defense back onto the field. BYU did a very respectable job against TCU, limiting the Horned Frogs to 381 yards. TCU ran for just 108 yards at an ugly 3.8 yards per carry. The Cougars also match up very well against Wyoming; they’ve shut out the Cowboys in two straight games.

Wyoming (2-5, 3-3 ATS) has already run a gauntlet of tough foes, losing to Texas, Boise State, TCU and Utah this season. The last two games came over the past two weeks, which the Cowboys lost a combined 75-6. Offensive struggles are nothing new for Wyoming, which averaged just five points per game in last year’s six losses. The rushing attack is an absolutely nightmare, grinding out just 68 yards per outing. That poor showing has completely stranded quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, who has some talent but not much else to work with.

On paper, the Cowboys look awful defensively, but there are two sides to that story. In games against elite competition (Texas, Boise State, TCU, Utah), Wyoming is allowing 40 points per game. Against lesser competition (Southern Utah, Air Force, Toledo), the number drops to a much-more respectable 18.3 points per game.

The Cougars are favored by 10.5 points, but either team will be lucky to even score 10 points total. These teams are equally bad, which should mean a close, low-scoring affair. Take Wyoming to cover.
