They’re back.

Oregon State returned to the Associated Press Poll this week at No. 24 and is 2-0 in Pac-10 play for the first time since 2003.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Katz, who was just named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week was brilliant, passing for 393 yards and two touchdowns, and diving in for another score as the Beavers held on for a 29-27 upset of the then-No. 9 Arizona Wildcats in Tucson last weekend.

Katz dissected and Arizona defense that had been ranked No. 2 nationally, giving up 230 yards per game, completing 30 of 42 and even scrambling for  three times for a first down on third-down situations.

Running back Jacquizz, Rodgers also had a breakout game rushing for 92 yards on 25 carries and caught three passes for 41 yards. His 1-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes remaining put the Beavers up 29-20.

But the victory would not come without a heavy price as WR James Rodgers was injured on a tackle midway in the second quarter after making a 56-yard touchdown catch that would later be nullified. The standout receiver will be sidelined with a season-ending knee injury. He had made seven catches for 102 yards, including a 33-yarder for the Beavers’ first score. Rodgers

It would seem that the Beavers have atoned themselves, and are back from the brink after suffering two early non-conference losses to TCU and Boise State dropping them out of the Top 25 rankings.

Just two weeks after the 56-21 pounding they received from No. 8 Nebraska, and after squeaking out a 32-31 win No. 18 USC, Washington’s weaknesses were again revealed in a 24-14 loss to ASU in their last outing.

The Huskies just looked awful, converting just 4-of-15 third down conversion attempts as QB Jake Locker came up short on at least two important occasions that could have been possible game changers.

The Huskies trailed for most of the contest with Locker finally hooking up with D’Andre Goodwin for a 15-yard touchdown to pull within seven early in the fourth.

It will now be the Beavers turn to build a dam to contain Locker whose ability to run the ball is just as dangerous as his arm. This will be what gives OSU defensive coordinator Mark Banker the chills.

The OSU-UW series dates back to 1897 with Washington having the overall advantage 57-33-4 thanks mainly to a 25-2 run between 1975 and 2003. But, since the Huskies 38-17 win in Corvallis in 2003, the Beavers currently hold a school record six-game win streak, and I expect that to be extended to seven.
