No. 11 Utah is on a serious tear, though the Utes could sure use a win over a ranked opponent. They won’t get it against Wyoming this week, as the Cowboys just want to start the battle back to .500.

Utah (5-0, 4-0-1 ATS) crushed Iowa State 68-27 last weekend. The offense has been out of control, posting over 50 puts in three straight games. The Utes had close to 600 yards against the Cyclones, and Shaky Smithson played the role of Mr. Everything. He had a punt return of 78 yards (to the two-yard line), a 32-yard touchdown pass and a 61-yard touchdown catch. Much of the offensive success can be attributed to the offensive line, which is doing a fantastic job opening running lanes and protecting quarterback Jordan Wynn. The ground attack is averaging 188 yards per contest, while Wynn wasn’t even sacked once in the victory over Iowa State.

The “D” bent but didn’t break against the Cyclones, but there is a little cause for concern. Iowa State racked up 348 total yards, including 170 yards on the ground (at 5.3 yards per pop). The Utes mostly stepped up in big situations, though, holding Iowa State to an 0-11 day on third-down conversions. Utah is usually much tighter on defense; its allowing just 267 yards per game this year.

Wyoming (2-4, 3-2 ATS) gets its second straight ranked opponent, and it didn’t work out very well last week; the Cowboys were crushed 45-0 by TCU. The “D” was completely overwhelmed, allowing scores on TCU’s first seven possessions. The Horned Frogs rolled up 305 yards on the ground as Wyoming simply had no chance to stop them. That’s nothing new for the Cowboys, who are getting chewed up for over 250 rushing yards per game in 2010. The pass defense has been more respectable, but teams rarely waste time throwing when they can pound the ball instead.

The offense obviously wasn’t much better though, in its defense, starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels didn’t play. Dax Crum was overmatched in his stead, going 11-17 for 116 yards and an interception. Of course he got no help from the running game, which mustered just 75 yards at 2.7 yards per carry. Carta-Samuels has an undisclosed injury and it remains unknown if he’ll suit up against Utah.

Even if he does, it won’t make a difference. Iowa State had some success running the ball last week, but Wyoming simply doesn’t have the weapons to make it happen against Utah. The Utes are gunning for style points right now, so expect a blowout.
