USC seeks to avenge its worst defeat in 43 years when they face the No. 16 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday night.

Stanford dismantled the Trojans in 2009, 55-21, behind a solid effort from star senior running back Toby Gerhart who compiled 325 yards on the ground in a win that was USC’s worst loss since falling 51-0 to Notre Dame in 1966.

To add to the humiliation, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh’s decision to go for a two-point conversion with 48-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter ignited a hullabaloo that USC isn’t likely to forget anytime soon.

Nevertheless, the Trojans will need to put the past behind them and focus on the issues at hand, which in the recent loss to Washington, would be the offenses’ ability to find the end zone on its two fourth-quarter possessions and the defense’s inability to hold a lead with just over two minutes remaining.

It wasn’t supposed to happen as USC suffered its first defeat as Washington’s Jake Locker accounted for 421 yards of offense in a 32-31 win at the Coliseum that was sealed with a 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Now they will face one of the most prolific QBs in the PAC-10 in Andrew Luck, who has so far accounted for 15 touchdowns — 13 passing– while completing 62.8 percent of his throws.

Luck will likely have another strong outing against the Trojans who is ranked 116th in the nation against the pass, allowing 288.0 yards per game, and 99th in total defense (419.0).

Luck threw for two TDs and ran for another against USC last season, but was betrayed by the Cardinal defense who allowed four straight TDs in Saturday’s loss to the No. 4 Oregon Ducks, despite Luck’s being 29 of 46 for 241 yards and two scores.

Heralded Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley will hope to do the same to the Cardinal defense who surrendered 626 yards in it loss to Oregon–238 passing.

Barkley has been impressive so far registering 12 TDs while laying claim to the Pac-10’s highest passer rating.

Still, USC may want to stick to the ground against Stanford, particularly since Barkley was intercepted three times in last season’s meeting, not to mention the Cardinal are 84th in the FBS against the run.

That should bode well for USC running back Allen Bradford who tops the nation with 9.8 yards per carry. The senior had career highs of 21 carries and 223 yards last Saturday.

Stanford has lost its last four home games in the series by an average of 24.8 points. They are scoring an average of 44.6 points per game and had held opponents to just over 13 ppg. game until their run in the Ducks.

It will take a little more than “Luck” to beat USC, but I expect Stanford to grab the win at home rebounding from their atrocious defensive meltdown against the high-octane Ducks.
