Can Nevada’s dream season continue? The Wolf Pack shouldn’t have too much trouble this week, as they’re huge favorites against the San Jose State Spartans this Saturday.

Nevada (5-0, 3-1 ATS) is enjoying its best start since 1991, when the program started 12-0 before losing a bowl game. The Wolf Pack continued their impressive offense season with a 44-26 win over UNLV last week. Running back Vai Taua was simply unstoppable, racking up 188 rushing yards on 19 carries while scoring four total touchdowns. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was very efficient in the victory, completing 13 of 17 passes for 124 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Kaepernick added another 97 yards and a score on the ground.

While the offense is rolling, the “D” has some holes to fill, though it played well against UNLV. The Wolf Pack racked up three sacks and two takeaways against the Rebels, but they’ve been vulnerable against the run at times. Eastern Washington and Cal, for example, combined to run for 387 yards against Nevada. The Wolf Pack buckled down against UNLV, holding the Rebels to 80 yards on 33 carries.

San Jose State (1-4, 1-2 ATS) is off to a sluggish start. The Spartans lost 14-13 to UC Davis, though that was at least an improvement from the previous week’s 56-3 loss to Utah. San Jose State had been getting crushed on the ground, giving up 171 rush yards per game, but it bounced back against UC Davis; the Aggies managed a paltry 37 yards on 24 rushes.

The Spartans moved the ball well enough, particularly in the first half. They outgained UC Davis 231-89 through the first two quarters, but they settled for field goals instead of touchdowns. Penalties were a large contributor, as San Jose State racked up 11 for 89 yards. Running back Lamon Muldrow had a great day, though, carrying 22 times for 137 yards. Receiver Josh Harrison also broke out for the Spartans, catching five passes for 119 yards. The junior had only caught three passes heading into the game.

Harrison might be without quarterback Jordan La Secla, however. He left the game with banged up ribs and its unknown whether or not he’ll go this week. Back up Matt Faulkner went 5-7 for 63 yards and a touchdown in his absence.

This is a brutal mismatch for San Jose State, and it’ll be a blowout to be sure. But San Jose State showed some life against the run last week, so it might slow down Taua and Kaepernick—at least for a little while. San Jose State should have enough success to cover.
