Week 6: Toledo at Boise St. Preview & Pick

Toledo is about to run into a buzz saw, as No. 4 Boise State is no doubt pissed after dropping in the polls despite winning big last weekend. The Broncos will be shooting for massive style points when they hook up with the Rockets on Saturday.

Boise State (4-0, 3-1 ATS) crushed New Mexico State 59-0 last weekend, yet it finds itself in fourth place in the polls—passed by new No. 3 Oregon. The Broncos raced to furious state against the Aggies, building a 31-0 lead just 16 minutes into the game. The “D” was phenomenal, racking up three turnovers in the first quarter. Boise State has been dominant against both run (75 yards per game) and pass (147 yards per game) this season. Although the Broncos notched just one sack against New Mexico State, they held the Aggies to just 90 yards through the air.

It was business as usual for Kellen Moore and the offense. The quarterback went 13-18 for 196 yards and three touchdowns, and he might have had even bigger numbers had it not been for a few dropped balls and penalties. The Broncos pounded out 299 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and just about everybody had a hand in it—five different players rushed for at least 30 yards.

Toledo (3-2, 3-2 ATS) is coming off a 20-15 loss to Wyoming. It was a bit of a letdown since the Rockets were favored and had won three straight games, all on the road. Toledo played pretty sloppily when it had the football. The offense converted just one of its 14 third-down attempts. Quarterback Austin Dantin was benched after a miserable effort, so fans got their first look at redshirt freshman Terrance Owens. He led two second-half scoring drives.

The “D” actually played pretty well when it wasn’t hamstrung by the offense. Toledo held the Cowboys to just 266 total yards while creating a pair of turnovers. Wyoming managed just 93 yards per carry on the ground at a dismal 2.1 yards per pop, while quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels went 11-21 for 102 yards and an interception. Carta-Samuels was also sacked twice by Toledo. Overall, the Rockets have done a nice job against the run this season, but they’ve been susceptible to the pass.

Toledo picked the wrong week to face Boise State. Last week, the Broncos came out focused and racked up a 59-0 victory; this week, they’ll probably be focused and angry, to boot. Kellen Moore should have no problems carving up the Rockets’ secondary. This will get ugly real fast.

Gambling Trends:

Toledo is 8-17 SU in its last 25 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Toledo’s last 9 games on the road
Boise State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Boise State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home

Toledo at Boise State pick: Boise State -39
