Oregon State (1-2) has dropped two of its first three contests and out of the Top 25 rankings poll after a tough 37-24 loss to No. 3 Boise State over the weekend.

Similarly, the Sun Devils have dropped two straight, first in a one-point loss to No. 11 Wisconsin and then 42-31 loss to No. 5 Oregon in a game where ASU put up 597 yards of offense but turned the ball over seven times and racked up nearly 100 yards in penalties.

Now the two will face off as Oregon State prepares for its PAC-10 season opener at Reser Stadium on Saturday.

The Beavers never really got things going on the dreaded blue turf of Broncos Stadium and were outgained 469-237. BSU QB Kellen Moore’s 19-for-27, 288 yards and 3 TDs shredded the Beavs’ secondary and were nearly double that of Oregon State’s Ryan Katz, who completed 12 of 26 passes for 159 yards and a single TD.

The ground assault wasn’t any better as RB Jacquizz Rodgers was held to 46 yards on 18 carries and a 4-yard TD run in the third.

Brother James also never really got it going with the exception of a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter before exiting the game early in the third, after being knocked out during helmet-to-helmet collision with Boise State safety Winston Venable. The first, All-American receiver has been listed as questionable for Saturday’s home game with Arizona State after being diagnosed with an apparent concussion.

Meanwhile, ASU (2-2) ran wildly through Oregon’s’ national leading defense, but the Ducks just made the plays when they had to, recovering three fumbles and intercepting Steven Threet four times, including three in the fourth quarter, killing the Devils chances of making a comeback.

Both defenses were suspect during their Week 4 matchups and things could get worse before they get better.

The Beavers will be without leading tackler, linebacker Dwight Roberson who is doubtful with a sprained knee. While the Sun Devils, could be without linebacker Vontaze Burfict and defensive tackles Lawrence Guy and Saia Falahola who are also banged up.

The biggest difference between the teams coming into Saturday’s contest is that ASU outplayed both of their last two opponents but made stupid young mistakes and shot themselves in the foot, while Oregon State was legitimately outplayed in their games.

Oregon could match ASU’s speed so it was more of a shootout. However, I can’t picture Oregon State doing the same.

If the Beavers want to come out ahead in this one, they will need to overcome their defensive lapses and get the ball moving on the ground. Likewise, it the Sun Devils want to bounce back after its string of bad luck, they need to say away from bad penalties and costly turnovers.

I’m going with Zona in this one Threet is the better of the two field generals.
