The scenario was much different the last time USC and Washington squared off, as QB Matt Barkley would remain sidelined with a sore shoulder as the Trojans seven-game winning streak over the Huskies came to an end in a 16-13 defeat last season in Seattle.

Now the No. 18 Trojans hope that with a healthy Barkley and a 4-0 start they can exact some revenge on their PAC-10 rivals when the two meet in Los Angeles on Saturday night

Things are looking good for first-year head coach Lane Kiffin who became the first USC coach since Jess Hill in 1951 to start 4-0 in his first season, as the Trojans rolled past the Washington State Cougars 50-16 in their conference opener last Saturday.

Barkley completed 16 of 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in the win, but also had two first-half interceptions, bringing his total to four interceptions in the last two games.

Meanwhile, the Huskies are coming off a pounding from its first game against a ranked opponent this year, falling to the then-No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 56-21.

Nothing functioned correctly in that loss including QB Jake Locker who completed just 4 of 20 for 71 yards, but added 59 yards rushing as a tough Cornhuskers’ front pressured the senior into mistake after mistake including two interceptions. His best throw of the day came on Washington’s first possession of the second half, a 45-yard touchdown toss to Jermaine Kearse who leads the team with 16 receptions for 338 yards and five TDs.

If the Heisman hopeful is able to rebound, it could pose a challenge for a USC defense that remains a work in progress after allowing 323 yards of offense last weekend, and is averaging 259 yards passing per game.

The Huskies defense is much better, allowing just 243 yards and just 14 ppg. They have some particularly stingy run stoppers who have held it opponents to just 86 yards rushing per game.

But they will be challenged by a Trojans running game that accumulated a season-high 285 yards last weekend, with Allen Bradford gaining 84, fullback Stanley Havili 80 and Dillon Baxter 75.

With Barkley and the Trojans running game clicking, I have no reason to think that the Huskies can produce enough to counteract the offensive onslaught they are about to receive. It will be close in the first half, but USC pulls away to cover the spread in the final quarter.
