They’ll look to get back on track at home against a much-improved Louisiana-Lafayette team. It is the Sun Belt against the Big 12 though, so Oklahoma State is a clear favorite in this one.

Lafayette

Mark Hudspeth has done an amazing job turning this Lafayette program around. This is a football program that has never really had much success before last season. In 2011, the Ragin’ Cajuns went 9-4 and won the New Orleans Bowl. The team has kicked off the 2012 season with two victories, but the road gets much tougher this week. Hudspeth actually hasn’t been happy with his team’s play in the first two weeks, and he has challenged them in the media a couple times this year.

Blaine Gautier rewrote the record books last year at the quarterback position. Gautier broke school records for a single season in passing yards, quarterback rating, passing touchdowns, and total yards last year. Lafayette is stacked with talent at the wide receiver spot, which allows them to spread out defenses and use Gautier’s knowledge of the system and pure skill to move them up and down the field. Defensively, the secondary is the strength of the defense. Melvin White is a 6’3 terrific cover corner who will be one of the best mid-major cornerbacks in the nation this year.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Oklahoma State

Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon are gone, but the Cowboys still have quite a few weapons on the offensive side. Joseph Randle is going to get more carries this year, and he is one of the better backs in the Big 12. Wes Lunt threw for 436 yards in last week’s game at Arizona, but he also threw three interceptions. Lunt’s inexperience is a real concern for this team as they go through a very difficult schedule this season. The Cowboys offensive front is strong in both pass and run blocking. Quinn Sharp may be the best punter in the nation, so don’t expect to see this team lose the field position battle too often.

The Oklahoma State defense allowed Arizona to score 59 points last week. Arizona had previously had almost no running game, but the Wildcats ran for 181 yards against the Cowboys last week. Oklahoma State’s defense was opportunistic last year, but they also allowed a lot of points on several occasions. This defense will have to be better this year since this offense certainly isn’t on the same level it was a year ago.

You better believe there will be a lot of points scored in this one. The total is set at 73, but I don’t even think that is high enough with these two teams. Both teams will be moving at a quick pace, and both offenses should have a lot of success.
