Neither UNLV nor Idaho is off to a particularly inspiring start this season, but both teams have a chance to turn it around when they match up on Saturday. It should be a pretty exciting game, with Bodog setting the spread at a single touchdown.

UNLV has been blown out of its first two games, including last week’s 38-10 loss in Utah (the Rebels also failed to cover the 20.5-point spread). First-year head coach Bobby Hauck is shouldering the responsibility but, at some point, the players need to step up, regardless of the competition. To be fair, though, UNLV has faced Wisconsin and Utah—two of the nation’s better programs—in its opening two weeks. That’s tough with several freshman filling out the active roster.

The Rebels’ offense was an absolutely nightmare against Wisconsin—just 12 yards in the first half—but looked much sharper against Utah. UNLV even won time of possession in the game and totaled 319 yards. Unfortunately, it didn’t translate into scoring. The Rebels’ lone touchdown came on a blocked field goal return. The defense isn’t much better; it has already been gouged for over 200 yards per game, and UNLV has yet to record a single quarterback sack.

Idaho got started on the right foot with a 45-0 demolition of North Dakota in Week 1, but it all came crashing down against No. 8 Nebraska last week; the Vandals were smacked around 38-17. Idaho threw the ball far too much, especially considering the day Nathan Enderle had. Not only did Enderle get sacked five times and add another five interceptions, two of his picks were returned for scores. Deonte’ Jackson racked up 67 yards on just 11 carries, so it’s likely he’ll get a few more touches against UNLV.

The Vandals have feasted on turnovers so far this season. The “D” has already come up with nine takeaways, and don’t think it all came against and overmatched North Dakota squad; Idaho recovered three fumbles and picked off a pass against the Cornhukers. Idaho was obliterated on the ground, but Nebraska has one of the better rushing attacks in the country.

This is a key stretch for Idaho. The Vandals appeared in a bowl game last year and now face three straight non-conference games against competition roughly at their level. There were flashes of potential in Idaho’s ground game after a Jackson and Princeton McCarty combined for 107 yards; they should be able to take advantage of UNLV’s run defense.

Gambling Trends:

UNLV is 1-8 SU in its last 9 games on the road
Idaho is 6-2 SU in its last 8 games at home
Idaho is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games
UNLV is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games

UNLV at Idaho pick: Idaho -7
