Boise State thought everything was peachy after a big Week 1 win over Virginia Tech. But, with the Hokies getting embarrassed last week, the Broncos are desperate for huge wins if they’re going to make a championship run. Boise State visits Wyoming this Saturday as a 24-point favorite.

The Broncos enjoyed a week off, but how much they enjoyed it is questionable after Virginia Tech’s 21-16 stink bomb against James Madison. What looked like a hard-fought win over a tough opponent now looks like a sloppy affair. Although Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes against the Hokies, he managed just 215 yards and was sacked twice. Luckily for Moore, the Boise State ground game was firing on all cylinders, racking up 168 yards at a gaudy seven yards per pop. Either way, it wasn’t the finest evening for such a dynamic offense.

Defensively, there’s even more cause for concern. Boise State was torched for 30 points against Virginia Tech—but the Hokies scored only 16 against James Madison. The Broncos really weren’t hurt too badly in the yardage department, however. Tech rushed for 128 yards, but it needed 44 carries to do it. Tyrod Taylor was very efficient under center, going 15-22 for 186 yards and a pair of scores. If anything, Boise State needs to do a better job producing turnovers; the “D” had just one against the Hokies.

Wyoming faces its second straight mountainous challenge. After opening the year with a win over Southern Utah, the Cowboys were whipped 34-7 by Texas last weekend.  Wins and losses are hardly on the team’s mind, however. Freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse was killed in a car accident on Labor Day weekend, and it’s impossible to blame the Cowboys for being distracted. Wyoming still has its pride, though, and head coach Dave Christensen has refused to use Narcisse’s sudden death as an excuse.

The offensive line has been a major problem. Wyoming is averaging an embarrassing 1.7 yards per carry through two games, leaving talented quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels in a pinch. It didn’t matter against Southern Utah, when Carta-Samuels lit the skies up for 319 yards and three scores. But, against national championship contenders like Texas or Boise State, offensive balance is crucial. On the other side of the football, Wyoming has been susceptible to big plays—often because of missed assignments or blow tackles.

What an awful couple of weeks for Wyoming. Facing two Top-5 teams is tough enough but, after losing a member of the family, it’s practically impossible. Perhaps emotions will swing in the opposite direction and give the Cowboys a push… but it’s unlikely. The talent gap is just too wide. Boise State is desperate for a big win and, sadly, Wyoming is ripe for the picking.
