Army escaped with a 31-27 road win over Eastern Michigan last week. The Black Knights had their ground game on a roll, racking up 309 yards and four touchdowns. It was a pretty balanced attack, as four different players ran for at least 60 yards. Jared Hassin scored three of the team’s four rushing touchdowns.

Despite the gashing attack, the coaching staff wasn’t happy this week—Army fumbled three times against Eastern Michigan (though it only lost one). This team can’t afford turnovers, especially since falling behind basically means game over; the Black Knights have no passing game to speak of. Trent Steelman went just 5/11 for 65 yards.

Eastern Michigan pounded Army on the ground. Dwayne Priest and Alex Gillet combined for 268 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries. If Army bends that badly against Hawaii, it’s in trouble. Gauging the Black Knights’ opening week pass defense is a little tougher; Gillet, Eastern Michigan’s quarterback, attempted nine passes. He only completed four and tossed an interception.

Hawaii lost a 49-36 shootout to USC. Let’s start with the good news: this offense is dangerous. The Warriors threw for 459 yards and three touchdowns last week, and they didn’t commit a single turnover. Even the ground game was on a roll, racking up 129 yards and a score. The bad news: starting quarterback Bryant Moniz was knocked out of the season opener and missed some practices this week. Both of Moniz’s back ups—Brent Rausch and Shane Austin—got playing time against the Trojans. They’ll each be ready should Moniz be unable to go against Army.

And now for the really bad news: Hawaii was humiliated on defense. The Trojans ran roughshod, racking up 246 yards on the ground while averaging a gaudy seven yards per pop. Though it won’t be much of an issue against Army, the Warriors also got burned in the air, surrendering five touchdown passes to Matt Barkley.

This is potentially a terrible match up for both defenses. How Army’s pass “D” holds up remains to be seen, but the Black Knights will get banged up on the ground. Hawaii, on the other hand, should get shredded by the run—Army’s specialty. Look for another big game from the Black Knights backfield. Army will get the job done.

Hawaii at Army pick: Army -3
