After producing the biggest turnaround in college football last year—going from just one win to eight—the Mustangs are trying to keep the train rolling in 2010. Unfortunately, they kicked off the season with a narrow 35-27 loss to Texas Tech. SMU struggled against the pass, allowing Tech to rack up 359 yards and four scores through the air. Although the Red Raiders didn’t run the ball much, SMU was much better snuffing out the ground attack, holding Tech to 87 yards and less than four yards a pop. The “D” created just a single turnover, though, something that has to get better moving forward.

Offensively, SMU has some serious kinks to work out. Sophomore Kyle Padron had a rough day under center, throwing three interceptions—part of a four turnover day for the Mustangs. The SMU rushing attack looked pretty solid, racking up 101 yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries. But, after trailing 21-7 at the half, the Mustangs weren’t able to really utilize it. Junior receiver Cole Beasley had a great night, leading his team with five catches for 57 yards and a pair of scores.

UAB is also coming off a loss: a 32-31 defeat at the hands of Florida Atlantic. It was an incredibly gut-wrenching defeat for the Blazers, as they lined up for a game-winning field goal on the last play of the game. It was a chip shot—just 28 yards—but Florida Atlantic blocked it.

The Blazers got a mixed effort from dual threat David Isabelle. The sophomore was marvelous carrying the football, racking up 22 carries for 218 yards and three touchdowns. His arm left UAB fans wanting, though, as he completed just nine of his 19 pass attempts for 79 yards, plus a touchdown and interception. Granted, Isabelle is in there because of his legs, but a better performance in the passing game might have lifted UAB to victory.

Florida Atlantic running back Alfred Morris gouged UAB for 103 yards on just 16 carries—including a 38-yard go-ahead touchdown scamper with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Clearly, a stronger effort against the run will go a long way for the Blazers. They also gave up several big plays in the passing game, including completions of 77 and 43 yards. Lester Jean tormented the UAB secondary, running wild with nine receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite some of the bad plays for UAB, the Blazers should have come out with a win in Week 1. SMU is the better team and should earn a victory when they meet this week, but UAB will cover the spread.

UAB at SMU pick: UAB +11.5
