UCF Knights

The Knights nearly blew their BCS chances by losing to lowly USF last week, but, luckily they overcame 5 turnovers to beat USF and kept their BCS chances alive.

UCF has a very good offense led by Senior quarterback Blake Bortles who has thrown for over 3000 yards, a 68% completion percentage, 22 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. Halfback Storm Johnson has been great when healthy. Johnson has run for 978 yards this season with 11 touchdowns to show for. And last week Johnson ran well, running for 62 yards on 10 carries.

As a whole, the Knights average 440 yards a game, with 283 coming by way of passing, and 157 rushing yards. All that has led to 34 points a game for the season.

UCF’s defense hasn’t been that bad either. They’ve been solid enough. For the season they’ve allowed 20 points per game, but in conference play it’s been a bit higher as they’ve given up 22 points a game. Overall, not bad.

SMU Mustangs

Last week, SMU did something no June Jones team has ever been done before: get shutout. That’s a first for any June Jones coached team. They’ll be looking to bounce back in a big way at home versus the number 16 team in the nation. Plus, as added incentive, the Mustangs will try and win to become bowl eligible.

It’s been a tough year, but in conference play SMU has turned it around a bit. SMU started the year 1-4 with an absolutely brutal schedule. They opened versus Texas Tech, got an easy touch on paper (that turned into a tough game on the field) versus Montana State as SMU won a one point game. SMU then proceeded to play both Texas A&M and TCU on the road.

Then to start off conference play, SMU lost at home versus Rutgers 55-52. But, from that point on SMU turned it around. SMU has gone 4-2 and put themselves to become bowl eligible. They had a chance last week, but Houston was just too much for them, and as stated above, the first time a June Jones team got shut out.

SMU will have to put the points versus UCF as UCF will score their fair share of points. SMU doesn’t have a very good defense so they will have to rely on an offense attack that has been good enough. Even with the shut out last week they still average 28 points a game.

Danny’s FREE College Football Pick:

All in all, I like UCF in this game. After the scare last week I’m banking on the Knights to come out focused and ready to go. They turned it over 5 times last week and still beat USF. This week, I believe they will clean that up and if they do they should handle SMU with relative ease. UCF has some explosive players like Storm Johnson and a very good quarterback in Blake Bortles to lead them to a victory and a victory that covers the double digit spread.

Pick: UCF -10
Prediction: UCF 38 – SMU 21
