Fans will say goodbye to the PAC-10 conference after 33 years when the Trojans and Bruins close out the season, making way for the new PAC-12 in 2011.

Ironically, USC and UCLA also played the final game in the history of the Pac-8 back on November 25, 1977, the Friday after Thanksgiving.

USC has won 10 of the last 11 meetings against UCLA, with UCLA’s lone win coming in a 2006 game at the Rose Bowl by a 13-9 margin. But prior to USC’s recent success, UCLA had won eight straight in the rivalry.

For Lane Kiffin’s boys of Troy the season has been an interesting one to say the least. After being hit by NCAA sanctions that included this year’s Trojans ineligibility for a postseason, USC stormed out the starting gate as If they had something to prove. In fact, at one point it looked as if the Trojans even had a shot at finishing with a 10-3 overall record until successive losses to Oregon State and Notre, altered their course.

Now they will just look to close out the season with a win over their cross-town nemesis that began the season with two consecutive defeats, but somehow miraculously pulled off three straight wins including two against top 25 ranked teams, Houston and Texas. Then disaster struck again, sliding all the way to ninth in the conference with a 4-7 record, and just wins in Pac-10 play.

Injuries could be blamed for the Bruins demise including a major blow to Rick Neuheisel’s new pistol offense when starting QB Kevin Prince was lost in October after exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. That thrust backup Richard Brehaut into an offense that had already been struggling to put points up on the scoreboard.

However, Brehaut has been a decent replacement fairing much better than most would have imagined, completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,066 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions in just seven starts including an early exit against Washington two weeks ago after suffering a concussion. Last Friday however, a healthy Brehaut broke Troy Aikman’s school record for completions in a game (33) in a 55-34 loss at Arizona State.

Meanwhile, Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley has been enjoying a standout season passing for over 2,500 yards while completing 63 percent of his passes for 25 TDs. Barkley should return for the season finale after missing last week’s contest against Notre Dame with a sprained ankle. He will have little trouble carving up a scrawny UCLA secondary as the Bruins defense has given up 79 points in its last two games as well as an average of 415.2 yards per contest.

This should also bode well for the running tandem of Mark Tyler and C.J. Gable who have combined for over 1.400 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns.

Likewise, the Bruins will need to bring their running game, and bring it early and often in hopes of generating enough scoring and time of possession to keep the game close.

Running back Jonathan Franklin has rushed for 1,018 yards and seven touchdowns while change of pace back Derrick Coleman has 462 yards and five touchdowns and averages 6.1 yards per carry. The duo should be able to squeak by a USC defense has given up big points this season and have allowed 20 or more points in seven of their last eight games.

Neither team’s defense has showed its ability to play for 60 solid minutes, while the Bruins offense has been barren pretty much all season. If the Trojan defense can hang in there long enough for Barkley to work his magic, USC should close out the year with a win.

One reply on “USC vs. UCLA Gambling & Week 14 Prediction”

I think UCLA will be able to establish their running game early on and shock SC. And Barkley playing tomorrow night could come back to haunt USC after missing a week and playing on a busted ankle!
