No. 2 Oregon will march north to engage its rival the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday in the annual Civil War game.

Every year this battle brings out the best in both schools as they compete for bragging rights, but this year’s game carries much more importance as a win for Oregon will send them to its first National Championship game in school history.

The contest is as equally as important to the Beavers as win would likely send them bowling with the satisfaction of ending the Ducks title hopes and their perfect season.

Mike Riley’s Beavers will definitely have to bring their best game to stop the Ducks and that will start by cracking down on the amount of yardage and points the defense has been giving up. The defense has been solid for the most part, but against the better teams they have been susceptible, allowing 25.9 points and 400.1 yards per game including 37 to Boise State earlier in the season and 38 last week as they were shut out by Stanford.

Something they cannot afford to do against the Ducks who are averaging 50.5 points and 543.5 yards per game.

But the Beavs won’t just need the defense to show up; they will need the offense to bring its a-game as well.

It’s been a ho-hum year for streaky quarterback Ryan Katz who has been brilliant at times but still makes key rookie mistakes. The first-year sophomore starter showed guts early on as Oregon State moved through a daunting out of conference schedule that included losses at Boise State and TCU.

Unfortunately, guts haven’t equaled wins as the Beavs are only averaging 24.8 points and 327.2 yards per game offensively. However, Katz has completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,177 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions, mainly to WR Markus Wheaton who leads OSU in receptions with 45 for 538 yards and three touchdowns, and TE Joe Halahuni who has 29 catches for 376 yards and six touchdowns. All this, after losing bottle rocket receiver James Rodgers to a season ending injury earlier in the campaign.

The loss of Rodgers has also affected the Oregon State running game as well. Without his deep ball threat, younger sibling Jacquizz Rodgers has been the key focus of the opposition’s defense, which has limited his potential. Still, Rodgers has performed rushing for 1,097 yards with a remarkable 14 touchdowns.

He will be the center of attention for an Oregon defense that has allowed just 18.3 points and 332.7 yards per game. Their only fault has been fading a bit in the second half.

But who wouldn’t when your offense is racking up enough points to put most of your foes away before the final quarter of play. However, the Ducks have been guilty of starting slow in many of their games before pouting it on in the second half. If they aren’t careful, this could cost them against a feisty OSU squad.

Oregon has relied on confident leader QB Darron Thomas to run its offense. Thomas stepped in for the departing Jeremiah Masoli and quelled the questions of his ability to mimic his predecessor. Thomas has surpassed any expectations not only completing 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,373 yards with 26 touchdowns, but also running for another 496 yards and five touchdowns.

Of course, he gets a lot of help from RB LaMichael James who has had a earth-shattering year rushing for 1,548 yards and 19 touchdowns along with Kenjon Barner who has averaged 5.9 yards per carry and has scored five times . The receiving corps has been brilliant behind the effort of Jeff Maehl (61 receptions for 857 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Beavers are 23-8-1 against the spread in their last 32 Pac-10 games, while Oregon is 20-6-1 against the spread when playing a team with a losing record. Normally I would take OSU at home especially with such a big spread, but not against this year’s Eugene Machine.

OSU always shows up for this bitter rivalry game, but Oregon is just too fast to contain this time around. I’d bank on the Ducks going to the National Championship game.
