The Huskies showed a little life pounding the Bruins last Thursday to end their three-game losing skid. Cal meanwhile, took a beating from Stanford at home, a place where they had been 4-1.

Now both teams are playing for their lives as Cal needs to beat Washington on Saturday to have a chance at a bowl game, and the Huskies  not only need to beat the Bears but also Washington State on Dec. 4 to reach bowl eligibility.

Quarterback and Heisman hopeful bust Jake Locker, will no doubt want to repeat last year’s performance in which he lead his Huskies to a dominating 42-10 win over the Golden Bears, a win that hyped his approval ratings. The reality is a largely disappointing 2010 season for the senior, but if he can lead the Huskies to wins in their final two games — at Cal and at Washington State — they will go to their first bowl game since 2002. That’s got to count for something, right?

While the Huskies could afford to just run the ball at a pitiful UCLA defense last week, they will need a more balanced attack to overcome a concrete Cal defense. While the Bears have been somewhat of a Jekyll and Hyde on offense, they have remained consistently solid on the defensive side of the rock.

The big question is can the G-Bears get its offense back on track? They have slipped after losing QB Kevin Riley to injury, losing three of its last four. Once again, Jeff Tedford’s offense will lean hard on shifty tailback Shane Vereen who was held to just 63 yards on 15 carries against Stanford last week after posting five 100-plus yard games this season.

One thing is certain. The Bears can no longer ride the whole “Cal is always great at home!” bit anymore. They have now suffered three blowout losses on the road and one blowout loss at home. The Cardinal flat out embarrassed them, but let’s bear in mind that Washington is no Stanford. Still they won’t want to take the Huskies lightly and end up with a repeat of last season.

If one thing can be gleaned from last week’s loss, it’s that Cal backup quarterback Brock Mansion is getting better with the short passing game and is making progress at sustaining drives. He should have a good day against a Huskies defense that is yielding 440 yards per game, including 220 through the air.
If the G-Bears offense shows up and plays four quarters, it should be able to dominate a weaker Washington defense while the Cal defense handles anything the Huskies offense may assemble.

But if it doesn’t, this could literally be the end of the road for Cal.
