The Trojans will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the latest edition of one of college football’s most storied rivalries on Saturday Night, as two teams that currently appear to be going in different directions play this one out.

After starting the season with a perfect 4-0 record, the Trojans took a detour and has dropped four of its last seven. The Irish meanwhile, has won its last two contests over No. 14 Utah and archrivals Army by a combined 55-6, and hasn’t allowed a touchdown in 11 quarters.  For the first time in a decade, Notre Dame will be going to a bowl while USC will not.

The Trojan’s offense will be without starting quarterback Matt Barkley who remains sidelined with an injury. Coach Lane Kiffin will go once again go with backup Mitch Mustain, who didn’t look good in relief last time out, completing 8 of 17 passes for 60 yards. USC has a lot of weapons in its arsenal, including receivers Robert Woods and Ronald Johnson and tailbacks Marc Tyler and Allen Bradford, but have failed to find a way to use them on a consistent basis.  As a result, the Trojans numbers, especially in the win column, have fallen sharply in the past month.

However, the problems don’t just end with the offense. The defense is on pace to give up the most points in Trojan history.  The Trojans have one of the nation’s worst pass defenses and is dreadful holding opponents on third down. USC’s deliverance in this game is that Notre Dame has been just as inconsistent on offense this season as well.

The Irish have however shown some life as of late, despite losing starting quarterback Dayne Crist to injury.  Backup Tommy Rees has managed eight touchdowns in the last three games guiding his team to two consecutive victories.

The running game has experienced the same set back after losing tailback Armando Allen, but sophomore Cierre Wood has shown he’s capable of shouldering the load. If Notre Dame can score early, it will put some pressure on the USC offense to keep up, and could force the Trojans into some costly mistakes.

Miscues that will play right into the hands of a solid Irish defense who have been steadily improving as shown by holding its last two opponents to three points while holding teams to under 21 points, eight times this season. Linebacker Manti Te’o leads the group and will not want to be embarrassed as in recent years by USC.  Look for Notre Dame to stack the box and challenge Mustain to beat them through the air.

The Irish has fallen to USC eight straight times and hasn’t won a game in the Coliseum since 2000.  But all streaks must come to an end as the Irish topple Troy in this one.
