While Oregon State dismantled the Trojans in its last outing, the Cardinals needed a last-second field goal to edge out USC. Significant? Probably not.

This is definitely the tale of two teams, as Stanford is on its way to its best season in school history, and the Beavers desperately need a win over the Cardinal, a team they completely destroyed just one year ago in Corvallis, to become bowl-eligible.

However, that Stanford team was much different from this years that is one of the more physical teams in the nation that combines finesse and discipline along with a healthy dose of smash mouth football.

While at lot of attention has been placed on Heisman contender, quarterback Andrew Luck, and the vaunted Cardinal offense, the real story behind the team’s success has been its much-improved defense. The Cardinal is fourth in the conference in total defense and third in scoring defense.  What’s more, they have given up only 44 points in their last four games.  Through 11 games, the Cardinal has 14 interceptions, 24 total turnovers, and 24 sacks, and over the last four games, has held opponents to just 11.3 points per game. This could spell trouble for OSU.

The Beavs are unpredictable to say the least, losing games they should have won, and winning games they probably should have lost. They are a feisty team at times, and that could be dangerous for Stanford team should they become complacent. The Cardinal must take caution as OS is fighting for its lives in this one.

The Beaver offense is designed nicely but lacks depth and its passing game has been hit hard with the loss of speedy receiver James Rodgers. This has allowed the opposition’s defense to focus on younger brother Jaquizz, who is the team’s workhorse running back. Quarterback Ryan Katz has been a pleasant surprise in just his sophomore year, and has improved with each and every outing. But he’s been inconsistent for much of the year partially to no fault of his own, as the O-line needs to do a better job of protecting him, allowing him more time to connect with WR Markus Wheaton and TE Joe Halahuni who have combined for eight Beavers receiving touchdowns this season.

On the other side of the ball, the Beaver attack begins with defensive tackle Stephen Paea.  The best chance for Oregon State in this game is if Paea can disrupt the Stanford run game early and force Luck to pass more than he desires.

Even then, the Beavers will struggle to contain one of the best offenses in the country that posses’ enough weapons to stretch the field and keep opposing defenses honest.

Although Oregon State is coming off an impressive win over USC, they are still a team that lost to UCLA and Washington State in the weeks prior.  The Cardinal will likely prove to be just too physical as they cover the spread in this one.
