Vanderbilt (2-9, 3-8 ATS) has dropped six consecutive games both straight up and against the spread. Last week it was a 24-10 loss to Tennessee, with Vandy failing to cover as an 8-point underdog. The Commodores have been crushed during the skid, losing by an average score of 38-11.

Who will line up under center remains a question mark. Both Larry Smith and Jared Funk were injured in last week’s loss; Smith has rib, elbow and knee injuries while Funk damaged his MCL. Considering Vanderbilt is averaging just 17 points per game, it’s not really a huge deal who starts. At least running back Kennard Reeves has brought something interesting to the table, racking up 165 yards in his last two starts. Vandy should focus on getting him the ball as much as possible on Saturday.

Big plays have killed the Commodore defense, but the unit actually had a respectable showing against Tennessee last week. Vanderbilt forced three turnovers and did a pretty respectable job slowing the Volunteers’ run game, holding Tennessee to less than four yards per game.

Wake Forest (2-9, 3-7 ATS) started the season with a bang, winning back-to-back games. Everything has melted down since then, with the Deacons losing nine straight—including an 0-5 run against the spread. They lost 30-10 to Clemson last week.

The offense racked up 107 points over the first two games but, since then, it hasn’t surpassed 27. Even that’s a distant memory; Wake Forest has been held to 14 points or less in four consecutive games, averaging just 10 per game in that span. Tanner Price will start at quarterback, though he’s yet to record a win this weekend. It sounds like Wake Forest will try airing it out a little more, which will be welcome news for an offense averaging just 150 pass yards per game.

On the other side of the ball, the Demon Deacons have done a very poor job tackling, leading to extended drives or big plays. Last week, for example, Clemson had touchdowns covering 40 and 63 yards, respectively. The Tigers finished the day with 182 yards on the ground.

This is going to be ugly. Neither team has showed much competence on either side of the ball. Wake Forest looks especially vulnerable on the ground, though, and Vandy is starting to get some production from Reeves. They’ll ride him to a grinding, one-touchdown victory.

Wake Forest at Vanderbilt pick: Vanderbilt -5.5
