Sometimes it just so happens that all the planets align in the galaxy of college football, and that’s just what happened as the Washington State Cougars ended a 16-game Pac-10 losing streak with a 31-14 win at Oregon State. The Cougars not only won, they physically dominated the Beavers, outgaining them 378 yards to 261.

It was the second consecutive loss, and third in four games for Oregon State, who got worked on both sides of the football as the defense surrendered 221 yards while the offensive line failed to either open holes or plug the gaps along the line of scrimmage, as Beavers rolled up just 97 yards rushing while allowing five sacks.

How can this happen? The Beavers were projected as the No. 3 team in the Pac-10 during the preseason and just two weeks ago were still in contention for a Rose Bowl berth. Now they will be lucky if they make it to the postseason, needing to win all of its remaining games to become bowl eligible.

In contrast, after losing three of four and the Trojans rebounded with back-to-back wins as they swept through the State of Arizona like a summer dust storm. A 10-win season now seems possible, if the Trojans can win out the season.

Sophomore QB Matt Barkley has been impressive in just his second season and continued showing his ability to lead the Trojans, passing for 170 yards and one touchdown and sneaking in for another as USC edged out the then-No.18 Arizona Wildcats 24-21.

Arizona just couldn’t stop USC as they racked up 24 first downs and 382 total yards of offense.

That aside, the biggest difference in the game was USC’s ability to find its missing running game, allowing the Trojans to control the clock and maintain possession for 15 minutes more than the Wildcats, while outrushing them 205 to 51 yards.

Running back Marc Tyler put on a clinic rushing 31 times for 160 yards and one TD.

If this is what USC will be dishing up, there could be chaos in Corvallis for a  Beavers defense that yielded 378 yards to a 110th ranked Cougars offense.

With a bevy of offensive talent at the skilled positions, Oregon State has the weapons needed to bring down Troy.  Ryan Katz, Markus Wheaton, and Jacuizz “Gidget” Rodgers are a formidable trio, combining for 30 TDs on the season.

Trojans fans beware, as you cannot leave out the fact that the defense still has some major flaws as illustrated in the win at Arizona. ‘Cats’ QB Nick Foles, despite the loss, still managed to toss for 353 of the Wildcats 404 yards with three TDs and no interceptions.

While the Beavs’ Katz may be no Foles, he definitely has the goods to embarrass a sleeping USC secondary.

With the Beavers in jeopardy of missing the bowl season for the first time in five years, I look for a little more fight out of Mike Riley’s squad. However, it’s what’s up front that counts, and with this game being won in the trenches, I just don’t see how the Beavers can dam up their problems along both sides of the line enough to let their stars shine in this one.
