The Beavers get a gift as they play host to an awful Washington State team that is still searching for its first PAC-10 and second win of the 2010 season.

Oregon State suffered its second loss in its last three games in a 17-14 shocker at UCLA last week. The loss could prove costly in the Beavs’ quest for a bowl bid, as they must finish with at least two wins in their last three, while facing some of the PAC-10’s most potent offenses — USC, Stanford, and archrival Oregon.

The Beavers’ should have no problem making quick work of Wazzou, but as they learned from their loss to the Bruins, they cannot take the Cougars lightly. Just ask Cal who almost fell victims of their own overconfidence, narrowly missing becoming the laughing stock of the PAC-10 by edging out a 20-13 win over WSU.

Offensively, Oregon State has been average, scoring 27.9 PPG that is 59th in the country.

Running back Jacquizz “Gidget” Rodgers has led the charge rolling up 800 yards and 13 TDs while catching two more for scores.

Another pleasant surprise has been the steady improvement of sophomore QB Ryan Katz, who has done a decent job in his first season as a starter, with 1,685 yards passing and 11 TD with just four interceptions.

Favorite target WR Markus Wheaton leads the Beavers with 29 catches and 361 yards while big TE Joe Halahuni leads the team with four receiving TDs.

“Hawaiian Joe” is dangerous on those short pass routes over the middle, and should keep the Cougars defenders busy as they continue trying to gain respect by limiting their opponents to less points per game. While a loss is a loss; for the Cougs’, just hanging in the game and making it close is an improvement.

The Cougars rank 110th in the country in offense at 17.6 PPG while also ranking 110th in defense by allowing 38.1 PPG.

Quarterback Jeff Tuel is one bright spot on the team as he has thrown for 2,325 yards and 14 TDs. But toss in 11 INTs and, well it’s like the rest of the Cougars woes.

Wide out Marquess Wilson is having a very impressive season as well with 50 catches for 935 yards and four TDs, while Jared Karstetter is doing the same with 50 catches for 541 yards and six TDs. Still the Cougs can’t seem to but a win. The reason? The running game.

The Wazzou rushers are averaging a paltry 2.4 yards per carry. RB James Montgomery is the team’s top rusher with 338 yards and four TDs.

Oregon State beat Washington State on the road 42-10 last season, and the key factor in this one will be Washington State’s ability to slow down “Gidget”, which is not an easy task.

Tuel will not be enough on his own to keep the Cougars in this game, as the Beavers get one at the Reser.

Sooooooo the Beavers a lock over the Cougs???? hmmmmmm WHY IN THE HELL would I even consider using your advice? on ANY future picks?

Tom-

This was probably one of college footballs biggest upsets of the week as Washington State snapped a 16-game (YES ! 16 GAME) conference losing streak.

It was the Cougars’ first Pac-10 win since a 16-13 overtime victory against Washington in the 2008 and the first time in seven games the Beavs have lost at Reser Stadium.

I hardly think that I was the only one who called this one wrong.

Thanks for stopping by.
