The No. 6 Stanford Cardinal continued their dominance beating then-No.15 Arizona 42-17 last week to move into second place behind undefeated Oregon in the PAC-10.

The Cardinal are solidifying their bid for possible Rose Bowl appearance while defining themselves as one of the best teams in the country with their only loss coming from the nation’s No.1 team.

The offense gets a lot of “luck”, as in Heisman hopeful, quarterback, Andrew Luck who has been a major reason why they are putting up better than 42 points per game, which is fifth best in the country.

Luck has been impressive in displaying why he will be one of the first quarterbacks to be picked up in next year’s NFL draft.  Only a junior, he has thrown for 2,213 yards and 22 TD with just six picks thus far. His favorite target has been WR Doug Baldwin who leads the team with 508 yards and six TDs while spreading the wealth to three others who have over two TD receptions apiece.

The running attack is equally prolific as tailback Stepfan Taylor leads Stanford with 810 yards and 11 TDs on the ground.  Taylor played a huge role in last week’s win over Arizona as he ran for four touchdowns.

It was more of the same as Arizona State suffered yet another close loss, its third of the season by three points or less, as they fell 34-33 to USC on the road last Saturday.

The Sun Devils are much better than their 4-5 record indicates, so you have to think they’re chances for upsetting top ranked teams is always lurking in the background.

The team is led by QB Steven Threet who has had a decent showing this year, tossing for 2,372 yards and 17 TDs, but he has also thrown 15 picks.

WR Kerry Taylor leads the Devils’ receiving corps with 38 catches for 495 yards and two TDs while Mike Willie has 31 catches for 384 yards and four TDs.

The running duo of Deantre Lewis and Cameron Marshall has combined for just over 1,000 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, and has been key in allowing ASU to hang with its opponents in numerous games.

Defensively they have allowed 24.4 PPG, but in their five losses, they have allowed 35 or more, including 50 to Cal.

While Arizona State was blown out by Stanford 33-14 in 2009, I think this year’s team is much better equipped and prepared for this season’s meeting. However, I still don’t think their defense will be able to contain the two-pronged attack of Luck and Taylor who will hit them from above and below as the Cardinal chase Oregon with a double-digit win on the road.
