Warhawks vs. Tigers

Is LSU (8-1, 4-4 ATS) good, or just plain lucky? Probably a little bit of both. The Tigers deserve credit for some fourth-quarter trickery in last week’s 24-21 win over Alabama, though they’ve definitely pulled out a few fluky victories this year (i.e. the Tennessee game).

The most glaring flaw is under center, where Jordan Jefferson has been luke-warm at best. He at least delivered solid, mistake-free football against Alabama, going 10-13 for 141 yards and one touchdown. Jefferson wasn’t sacked or intercepted. Stevan Ridley led the way on the ground, racking up 88 yards and a score on 24 carries. LSU ground out 225 rushing yards on the day, which is about par for the course.

The defense, of course, is carrying the team. LSU has been brilliant against the pass, holding opponents to just 157 yards per game. ‘Bama quarterback Greg McElroy was sacked three times and picked off once, part of two takeaways by LSU on the day. The Tigers also did a respectable job against the dynamic running duo of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, holding them to 125 yards on 27 carries. You could do much worse against the formidable tandem.

Louisiana-Monroe (4-5, 5-3) lost 42-35 in double-overtime at Florida-International last week, though it covered for the fourth time in five games. Redshirt freshman Kolton Browning continued to impress; he went 27-38 for a career-best 339 yards. His favorite target was another redshirt freshman, Tavarese Maye. Maye racked up 146 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown catch. With the Warhawks averaging just 100 yards per game on the ground, Browning and the passing attack will continue to be the focal point of the offense.

On the other side of the ball, Louisiana-Monroe is getting ground up by the run. The Warhawks allowed 242 rushing yards to Florida-International. On the year, the Warhawks are getting gashed for 170 per game. They haven’t exactly been stellar against the pass, either, though they intercepted the Golden Panthers three times while coming up with three sacks.

LSU should have no problems earning a victory; it will pound the football against a soft Louisiana-Monroe run defense. The Warhawks’ best weapon is the pass, which LSU excels at stopping. Still, 32.5 points is a lot to cover—LSU hasn’t scored more than 33 points in a game this year. The Tigers will cruise to victory, but a slow, grinding, ball-possession game will prevent them from covering. Take Louisiana-Monroe.

Betting Trends:

LSU is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
LSU is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games
Louisiana-Monroe is 1-6 SU in its last 7 games on the road

Louisiana-Monroe at LSU pick: Louisiana-Monroe +32.5
