Broncos at Vandals

Boise State (8-0, 6-2 ATS) crushed Hawaii 42-7 last week, covering as 22.5-point favorites. The Broncos are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games despite being favored by an average of 34 points in those contests.

The victory over Hawaii was particularly impressive; the Warriors had won six straight games, yet Boise State breezed right past them. The “D” held Hawaii to just 196 yards—the school’s lowest total since installing the run-and-shoot in 1999. Perhaps the only blemish is the Broncos failed to record a turnover, though they did run wild with seven sacks.

The Broncos have put up video-game numbers on offense all year, but it was downright comical against Hawaii. Boise State racked up a school-record 737 yards. Kellen Moore was behind most of them, as usual. The star quarterback went 30-37 for 507 yards and three scores. The rushing attack, meanwhile, racked up 230 yards, including 92 and three touchdowns from Jeremy Avery. Boise State must protect the ball a bit better, however. It had three turnovers.

That’s all very, very bad news for Idaho (4-5, 3-5 ATS). The team has dropped three of its last four games, including four straight against the spread. Two weeks ago, Idaho was crushed 45-10 by the same Hawaii team Boise State just whipped. Worse yet, last week the Vandals proved they don’t exactly get up for ranked up competition—No. 25 Nevada dominated Idaho 63-17.

The Vandals actually have a pretty respectable offense. They’re averaging 28 points per game, though they’ve managed just 27 total points over the past two games. A lack of ground game certainly isn’t helping. Idaho is 116th in country in rushing at just 83 yards per outing. That puts far too much pressure on Nathan Enderle and the passing game.

Of course, the offense looks like one of the best in college football history compared to last week’s defensive effort. Idaho surrendered a remarkable 844 yards to Nevada, including 453 on the ground (at a whopping 7.9 per carry). Three separate Wolf Pack players eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

Boise State has won 11 consecutive games against Idaho, including 7-4 against the spread. Last year, the Broncos earned a 63-25 victory as 32-point favorites. Friday should be more of the same. Boise State is firing on all cylinders right now, as last week’s romp over Hawaii proved. The Vandals have lost by at least 35 points or more in two straight games—and Boise State is better than either of the teams Idaho faced in those match ups.
