Just when things were starting to look better for the Cougars after playing three ranked opponents tenaciously, it all fell apart with a 42-0 pounding against Arizona State last week.

The Cougs have just three more chances to prove to themselves that they can beat a PAC-10 opponent, starting this Saturday when they host an equally struggling Cal Golden Bears.

The G-Bears have been the divisions most unpredictable team and have been on a roller coaster ride since they opened the 2010 season by outscoring their foes 104-10 in their first two games, then pounding UCLA 35-7, but followed by falling to Oregon State in the reversal, 35-7 last weekend.

California has been dominating at home, but besides a 10-9 loss at Arizona, has been awful on the road, losing their other three games by at least 21 points. If Cal wants to have a postseason, they cannot afford to lose this one in Pullman.

They will lean heavily on running back Shane Vereen since quarterback Kevin Riley is not expected to play due to injury. The junior has rushed for 774 yards this season, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, but in last week’s loss to Oregon State, a team that was struggling against the run, Vereen had just 53 yards, on just 12 carries.

WSU middle linebacker C.J. Mizell and the rest of the Cougars run defense will have to at least slow down Vereen. If they can plug holes and force long yardage on third down, it should be able to limit its time on the field, allowing the offense to operate.

That offense is led by QB Jeff Tuel who despite the Cougars abysmal record, is 27th in passing (fourth in the Pac-10) at 248.1 yards a game, with a season total of 2,233 yards.

So what’s wrong?

Well for starters, the Cougars rank last (120th) in three of 37 categories the NCAA lists for the FBS. Total defense (487.7 yards allowed), tackles for losses allowed (9.4), and first downs allowed (25.3). They also rank next to last in rushing defense (224.3) and red zone scoring percentage (58.6 on 17-for-29 success).

The last two times these teams have met, the Bears have run all over WSU, gaining 391 two years ago, and 309 last season as Cal defeated Washington State, 49-17, in Berkeley.

If the Cougars lose their three remaining games, they will break the school record of nine straight losses in one season, while tying the Pac-10 record of nine conference losses and tie the school record of 11 overall losses. All three of those marks were set or tied by WSU in 2009.

My opinion? It will be a recorded setting season for Washington State starting on Saturday against the Bears.
