Oregon State will take on its second California team in the last seven days as they travel to Pasadena this weekend to play the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl.

It’s the closet to smelling roses that the Beavers are unfortunately going to get this season as they look to string back-to-back wins together for the first time since early October.

After a gutsy 2-point conversion gamble that resulted in a double overtime loss to Washington, the Beavers rebounded by pounding Cal 35-7 in Corvallis their last time out. It was an impressive win as the Oregon State’s defense kept the Golden Bears scoreless until the final quarter.

Offensively, running back Jacquizz Rodgers dissected the G-Bears front seven rushing for 119 yards on 22 carries, while registering a trio of touchdowns that included passing for one in the first quarter, to give the Beavers an early 7-0 lead.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Katz didn’t turn in a lights out performance but did contribute with one passing touchdown to Joe Halahuni, finishing 20 of 29 for 184 yards.

Katz however leads an offense that continues to score at a clip of nearly 30-points per game, with his 1,503 yards — an average of 219.6 a game — while Rodgers and change of pace back Markus Wheaton, who doubles as the Beavers No. 1 receiver, has combined for 179 carries and 859 yards. Rodgers has an astonishing 13 touchdowns and continues to be a one man wrecking crew.

The defense, although making a stand against Cal, has been shaky and inconsistent at times, surrendering nearly 30 points per game.

That may be something the Bruins can take advantage of as they continue to slide, losing three straight against California, Oregon, and Arizona.

After an embarrassing 60-13 blowout to No. 1 Oregon, UCLA turned in a much better performance in its 29-21 loss to No. 15 Arizona last weekend.

At least on the scoreboard.

The truth is the Wildcats led in just about every category statistics wise, including rolling up 583 yards on 32 first downs to UCLA’s 15 and 299 yards.

UCLA’s Richard Brehaut completed 13 of 27 for 228 yards and two touchdowns as the Bruins were stopped dead in their tracks by an Arizona defense that held RB Johnathan Franklin to a pitiful 44 yards rushing, while counterpart Derrick Coleman was held to 42, with only a single touchdown between them in the loss.

The Bruins continue to be their own nightmare allowing 30 points a game, including 124 during its three-game losing streak. During that span, they have only totaled 41 offensively, managing 21 points a game for the season.

UCLA owns a 39-15-4 advantage in the series dating back 1930, but the Beavers have won two straight, including a 34-6 win at the Rose Bowl in 2008 and a thrilling 26-19 victory in 2009.

The Bruins tumbled from their promising start that included wins against Houston and Texas is likely to continue that fall against Oregon State. The Bruins can’t seem to find the end zone enough for the amount of points they are giving up.

Rodgers is sure to have a breakout day against such a weak defense, opening up a half time lead that will have UCLA trying to catch up.

Free Pick: Oregon State
